Turtle Bow, Dublino looking ahead

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Although Turtle Bow and Dublino promise to emerge as major players in the female turf division, there are no guarantees that will happen Sunday at Hollywood Park. Nine fillies and mares entered the Grade 3 Wilshire Handicap, a 1 1/16-mile race that is not the primary objective for either.

"They are ready to run, and I hope to use the race as a good prep to the Gamely," said Laura de Seroux, trainer of both Turtle Bow and Dublino, adding, "They are fit enough to race, but their best is in front of them."

Godolphin brings in 14 older horses

ARCADIA, Calif. - Trainer Eoin Harty turned loose the 36-horse contingent of Godolphin imports Friday morning at Santa Anita, the first time they had trained since arriving Monday from Dubai. Based on energetic and lively mannerisms - many were prancing and jumping - the horses were happy to be back under tack after spending four days in quarantine.

Longtime partners on a hot streak

ALBANY, Calif. - Two of the hottest jockeys at this meet are veterans Roberto Gonzalez and Chad Schvaneveldt.

Through Thursday's races, Gonzalez, 48, was third in the standings with 15 victories in 60 mounts (25 percent). Schvaneveldt, 39, ranks fifth with 10 wins in 47 mounts (21 percent).

Schvaneveldt won the meeting's first stakes race, the $75,000 Miss America, aboard Lindsay Jean. Gonzalez has ridden five stakes winners in the past five weeks, including Mr. Technique in the $100,000 California Derby and Presidio Heights in the $60,000 Atherton.

Step back for Grey Comet

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - After Grey Comet finished second in the Grade 3 Gotham, his third consecutive loss in an open stakes, trainer Gary Contessa decided to reacquaint the colt with restricted company.

Contessa tabbed Sunday's $150,000 Times Square at Aqueduct for Grey Comet, who is undefeated in three starts against New York-breds.

But if Grey Comet, who will be the Times Square favorite over five others, runs a big race, he won't be long for restricted company. A berth in the Preakness at Pimlico on May 17 would be considered for his next start.

The Park Avenue is restricted to the progeny of New York-based stallions and is part of the New York Stallion Stakes series, which also includes Sunday's Times Square.

At 11, two still roll occasional 7's

STICKNEY, Ill. - On Feb. 15, 1995, a horse named Shed Some Light made his career debut at Remington Park. Two months later, at Oaklawn Park, Wild About U had the first start of his life.

At 11, both have reached rocking-chair age now, but they are still racing with success at Hawthorne. Shed Some Light, who was to run here Saturday, finished second in his last start, while Wild About U celebrated his 100th career race with a win here on April 13.

So solid is Wild About U for a horse his age, he was claimed out of the race by trainer Joey Camardo.

See How She Runs ready to strut her stuff

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - See How She Runs will be a heavy favorite in the allowance feature at Lone Star Park on Sunday when she stretches back out around two turns and sheds the blinkers she has been wearing in her most recent races.

The one-mile money allowance for fillies and mares drew a field of six, including regional stakes winners Due to Win, Mysia Jo, and Strawbailey. But based on past class, See How She Runs is a standout. Last year, she won 5 of 8 starts, including the Grade 1 Selene at Woodbine and the Grade 2 Fantasy at Oaklawn.

A long-distance specialist, she dusted males in the Grade 3 Canadian Derby at Northlands Park in August, and beat older females Nov. 2 in the Grade 3 Maple Leaf Stakes. She has been out of action since running fifth in the Grade 2 Falls City Handicap at Churchill Nov. 28.

Majestic Wisdom breaks down in work

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Majestic Wisdom, who had thrust himself into the Queen's Plate picture by upsetting Wando in the March 30 Achievement Handicap, suffered a career-ending injury during a workout here Friday morning.

"He fractured his front left sesamoid, and the suspensory apparatus is torn away," said trainer Chantal Paquette. "I don't think at this point it's life-threatening, but the next few days will tell."

Majestic Wisdom, with jockey Constant Montpellier in the irons, was working in company with stablemate Belle de Naskra, who had Paquette aboard.
