Elusive Thought takes Fury Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Elusive Thought shook loose on a clear lead and was never headed in Sunday's $162,750 Fury Stakes, a seven-furlong dash for Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies at Woodbine.

Jim McAleney rode Elusive Thought, who set slow fractions of :23.33 and :46.71 seconds over a track which was kind to speed. She held off a closing Mountain Dawn to win by a length, in a final time of 1:24.10.

"It worked out well for us," said McAleney. "She was running well on the lead, with her ears pricked. It was just a matter of how far we were going to go."

Router cuts back and wins

Horses without much early speed are rarely successful when they try to cut back from a route to a sprint. Gimmeawink is an exception to that rule of thumb.

A non factor in his two most recent starts going two turns, Gimmeawink ($11) made the difficult transition from 1 1/8 miles to six furlongs in Saturday's $75,000 Francis "Jock" LaBelle Memorial Stakes for 3-year-olds at Delaware Park.

Ridden by Clinton Potts for trainer Tim Ritchey, Gimmeawink was sprinting for the first time since New Year's Day and he had not won at six furlongs since last November.

Aunt Sophie wins Santa Clara

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Aunt Sophie ($22.20) burst through a small hole between rivals in the stretch then pulled away to score a 1 3/4 victory in the $61,900 Santa Clara Handicap at Bay Meadows on Saturday.

Aunt Sophie sat closer to the pace than usual in the one-mile race and still had plenty left in the stretch as she beat stablemates Lacie Girl and Lost At Sea, who lost a head bob for second at the wire. Winning time over a track labeled wet fast was 1:34.74.

Three Chimneys: Limehouse wins

For Todd Pletcher, three was not a crowd. It was barely enough.

Pletcher trained three of the seven 2-year-olds in Saturday's $114,000 Three Chimneys Juvenile Stakes at Churchill Downs. Heckle was the odds-on favorite at 1-2. Korsakoff was the distant second choice at 5-1. But it was the lesser-regarded of that trio, 6-1 shot Limehouse, who saved the day for Pletcher by rallying to win the five-furlong stakes race by 1 1/4 lengths.

Citgo Turf Mile: Frankel, again

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Heat Haze conceded her field a couple of lengths leaving the starting gate for Saturday's $117,000 Citgo Distaff Turf Mile. But that only served to make things a bit more interesting before Heat Haze blew away the competition en route to a 1 1/2-length victory over Quick Tip and nine other fillies and mares in the Grade 3 event.

Heat Haze is owned by her breeder, Juddmonte Farms, and gave her trainer Bobby Frankel his second of three straight stakes victories on the Kentucky Derby undercard.

Aldebaran comes through

Horsephotos
Aldebaran draws clear in the stretch to win the Churchill Downs Handicap by 2 1/2 lengths as the favorite. Next up: Belmont's Met Mile.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Aldebaran, the solid favorite in a field of 12 older horses, shed his bridesmaid's tag - at least for one memorable Saturday afternoon - by drawing off to an emphatic 2 1/2-length victory in the 69th running of the $233,800 .

After Twilight Road and Lord Abounding took turns on the lead in the Grade 2 Churchill Downs Handicap, Aldebaran swept past most of the field to win the seven-furlong race in 1:21.80. Pass Rush, a 10-1 shot, finished second, a neck ahead of Cappuchino, the longest shot in the field at 79-1.

Tomillo old-timer finds spot

STICKNEY, Ill. - At 8, Sir Shimmy is old for a racehorse, though in the barn of trainer Tom Tomillo, he merely qualifies as middle-aged. Shed Some Light, trained by Tomillo at the time, won a bottom-level claiming race last week at age 11. Three years younger, Sir Shimmy has his sights on a bigger prize, namely Hawthorne's allowance feature on Monday.

Race 8 on this meet's penultimate program, Sir Shimmy's race is for second-level allowance horses at six furlongs. And only a surge to a performance level he had never previously attained has landed Sir Shimmy in this spot.
