Pimlico: Tam's Terms wins

Tam's Terms picked up right where he left off 10 months ago as he remained unbeaten on the turf by scoring a 2 3/4-length victory over Glick in the $65,000 Henry S. Clark Stakes at Pimlico.

After winning just one of his first 10 career starts, the 5-year-old Tam's Terms ($9.80) is now 4 for 4 since he was switched to the grass last May by trainer Lawrence Murray.

Delaware: Gimmeawink cuts back

Horses without much early speed are rarely successful when they try to cut back from a route to a sprint. Gimmeawink is an exception to that rule of thumb.

A non factor in his two most recent starts going two turns, Gimmeawink ($11) made the difficult transition from 1 1/8 miles to six furlongs in the $75,000 Francis "Jock" LaBelle Memorial Stakes for 3-year-olds at Delaware Park.

Ridden by Clinton Potts for trainer Tim Ritchey, Gimmeawink was sprinting for the first time since New Year's Day and he had not won at six furlongs since last November.

Volponi possible for Bold Ruler

ELMONT, N.Y. - Talk about an embarrassment of riches.

Two days after winning the Kentucky Derby aboard Funny Cide, jockey Jose Santos was aboard his 2002 Breeders' Cup Classic winner Volponi on Monday morning, guiding him through a half-mile workout in 47.80 seconds at Belmont Park.

"It can't get better than that,' Santos said, before catching a plane to south Florida, where he planned to surprise his kids by having dinner with them.

It actually can get better for Santos.

Six-figure Ascot 'Cap purse attracts only 13

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Bay Meadows officials gambled a bit when they decided to maintain the $100,000 purse for Saturday's Ascot Handicap.

The gamble may have backfired.

Only 13 3-year-olds were nominated for the 1 1/16-mile turf race. Neither of the two highweights, Steelaninch, winner of La Puente at Santa Anita in his last start, and California Derby winner Mr. Technique, will start.

Sky Terrace, a fresh danger

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sure, there will be a crowd Wednesday at Churchill Downs - just 140,000-plus fewer people than what showed up the last time racing was held here.

The three-day break between the Kentucky Derby and the subsequent 45 days of racing at Churchill in the spring is something like the Grand Canyon, dividing the meet into two distinct parts. Casual fans overrun the track on Derby weekend, but then only about 5,000 or so are in attendance on a typical weekday, proud to represent the bread-and-butter on which racing relies so heavily.
