Better distance for Minister's Baby

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Working on the reasonable assumption that Minister's Baby needed her last race, trainer Ken McPeek is looking forward to seeing the mare stretch out in distance and race around two turns Sunday.

"We're bringing her back a little quicker than I'd normally want," McPeek said. "But if we're going to make the Fleur de Lis, we've got to get another race like this into her."

Minister's Baby returned from a lengthy layoff May 15, finishing a distant second behind For Rubies in a 6 1/2-furlong allowance race.

Pressure is on Singletary

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Singletary might be on a two-race winning streak going into Sunday's $100,000 Will Rogers Handicap at Hollywood Park if only trainer Don Chatlos Jr. had issued a different set of instructions last month.

Chatlos is blaming himself for over-coaching before the La Puente Stakes at Santa Anita on April 12. In hindsight, Chatlos wishes he had told jockey David Flores to keep Singletary near the front. Sent off as the even-money favorite on the strength of a minor stakes win in March, Singletary was fourth early and rallied to finish second by a nose.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Stately Jack Flash, who was fifth in the Oregon Derby at Portland Meadows in his most recent start, will take on four other 3-year-olds in a $35,000 claiming race at Hastings on Sunday. Quarter crack puts Best of the Rest on hold

MIAMI - The complexion of Monday's $100,000 Memorial Day Handicap changed dramatically late this week when trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. declared defending champion Best of the Rest from the Grade 3 stakes due to a nagging quarter crack.

Best of the Rest would have been the 122-pound highweight and the odds-on favorite to win the Memorial Day Handicap for the second straight year.
