LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Kiss the Devil got a perfect stalking trip under Lonnie Meche and held off favored Quick Tip to score a 13-1 upset in the 27th running of the Grade 3, $168,300 Early Times Mint Julep Handicap at Churchill Downs on Saturday.

Owned by Churchill board chairman Carl Pollard and trained by Dave Vance, Kiss the Devil took over from front-running Crystal Sea turning for home, then had just enough left to prevail by a neck over Quick Tip, the 8-5 favorite in a field of nine fillies and mares. Cellars Shiraz, the 120-pound highweight, was another length back in third.

Lone Star: Win for 'Bridget Jones'

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Miss Bridget Jones remained perfect in three career starts when she won her stakes debut in the $150,000 Stonerside.

It was three lengths back in second to Souris, who was three-quarters of a length clear of City Sleeper.

Miss Bridget Jones ($8.40) dueled with Letithappencaptain through fractions of 22.08 seconds for the opening quarter and 44.19 for the half. At about the eighth pole, Miss Bridget Jones disposed of that rival, and went on to cover seven furlongs over a fast track in 1:22.56.

Delaware Park: Don Six romps

Heavily favored Don Six ($3.40) splashed his way to a 3 1/2-length victory in the $57,900 Floor Show Stakes.

Racing for the first time outside New York, Don Six went wire to wire against four other 3-year-olds and won comfortably despite drifting out in midstretch. He covered 1 1/16 miles over a sloppy track in 1:45.69.

Ridden by Jose Caraballo for trainer Frank Generazio, Don Six is now 3 for 5 lifetime.

Pimlico: Native Heir relishes slop

Native Heir loves the mud so much that he wins for the sixth time in the off-going today, this time taking top honors in the $75,000 Ben Cohen Stakes at Pimlico.

Native Heir, seven lengths off the pace on the backside and still five behind in the stretch, swung out wide late and passed the pacesetting Baby Shark to win the $75,000 Ben Cohen by a length.

Baby Shark held on for second, a half-length ahead of 6-5 favorite Sassy Hound in third. Ridden by Rick Wilson, Native Heir ran the five furlongs over a sloppy track in 57.56 seconds and paid $5.

The field was reduced from 11 to five after the race was moved from the turf course to the main track because of wet weather.

Woodbine: Fly Smartly soars

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Sam-Son Farm, trainer Mark Frostad, and jockey Todd Kabel won the Grade 3 Connaught Cup Stakes at Woodbine for the second year in row, this time with Fly Smartly.

Fly Smartly raced about three lengths off the pace while wide in the $173,550 event, which was run over very soft turf at 1 1/16 miles. Le Cinquieme Essai and Silver Spear hooked up on the front end through fractions of 25.13 and 49.94 seconds while being stalked by Solitary Dancer and Stage Classic.

Thistledown: Just Michel stays up

NORTH RANDALL, Ohio - Just Michel had to survive a stewards' inquiry and a rider's claim of foul before being awarded the win in the $35,000 Brent's Princess Stakes.

Jockey Michael Rowland, aboard third-place finisher Tisourturn, claimed interference against Just Michel and runner-up Mercer's Launch. Tisourturn was put up to second and Mercer's Launch was dropped to third, but Just Michel remained the winner.

Just Michel, ridden by Ricardo Feliciano, ran the six furlongs in 1:12.26 and paid $25.20. She is owned by M.Y. Stables Inc. and trained by Michael Nance.

Black Ruby wins again

Black Ruby defeats Taz by a half-length in Friday night's $10,000 Battle of the Titans match race at Los Alamitos.

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. - Black Ruby beat Taz in a match race of leading mules on Friday at Los Alamitos, her third match race win over her rival in the last year.

Black Ruby ($2.40) beat Taz by a half-length over 300 yards in a $10,000 match. The two met in match races last summer, with Black Ruby winning by two lengths over 400 yards at Del Mar and by a half-length over 350 yards at Fairplex Park.

Bien Nicole back to her best surface

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - The last WinStar Distaff winner trainer Donnie Von Hemel saddled paid $60.40. Bien Nicole won't be near as generous of a price Monday when she makes her first turf start of the year in the seventh running of the one-mile race for fillies and mares.

The Grade 3, $200,000 Distaff, which is graded for the first time, is one of seven stakes worth a total of $1 million on Lone Star Million Day.

Bien Nicole brings an outstanding turf record into the Distaff, which also drew California invaders Little Treasure and Magic Mission.
