Sprint stakes has rematch and more

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - The rematch of Cee's Elegance and Jetinto Houston, the first two finishers in a thrilling B. Thoughtful Stakes on April 26, is only one subplot in an intriguing running of the $100,000 Desert Stormer Handicap at Hollywood Park on Saturday.

Cee's Elegance and Jetinto Houston were separated by only three-quarters of a length in the seven-furlong B. Thoughtful. They will have more than each other to contend with in the Grade 3 Desert Stormer, for fillies and mares over six furlongs.

Plenty of Honeymoon threats

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Rutters Renegade finished a sharp second when she made her United States debut in the Grade 3 Senorita Stakes at Hollywood Park on May 17.

Normally, that sort of performance would make her a leading contender for Saturday's $200,000 Honeymoon Breeders' Cup Handicap, but this year it's not that simple.

The Grade 2 Honeymoon, run over 1 1/8 miles on turf for 3-year-old fillies, has drawn a deep field, with several runners capable of winning the stakes, which serves as an important prep for the $750,000 American Oaks on July 5.

Trebizond wins Meadow Brook Hurdle

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trebizond, who won the Grade 1 Hard Scuffle in his last start over jumps, added another Grade 1 to his record by winning Thursday's $106,150 Meadow Brook Hurdle at Belmont Park.

Trebizond, the second choice in the field of 11 jumpers, was a 3 1/4-length winner over longshot Blasphemous. It was another neck back to Mr Perkolater in third.

Trebizond, who was ridden by Tom Foley, covered the 2 1/2-miles in 4:57.65 over a soft course.

Trebizond returned $9.60.

Senor Swinger big favorite in Jefferson Cup

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - He took one swing, and he missed. So three weeks after running a distant fifth behind Funny Cide in the 128th Preakness at Pimlico, Senor Swinger is in action again, but not in the Triple Crown series.

Instead, Senor Swinger will run Saturday as the heavy favorite in the $200,000 Jefferson Cup at Churchill Downs, marking a return to a turf course on which he wowed many Triple Crown fans by winning the Crown Royal American Turf on the day before the Kentucky Derby.

Halo Cat can catch speed types

SAN MATEO, Calif. - One of the truisms of racing is that pace makes the race.

One thing is certain in Saturday's Grade 3, $150,000 Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Sprint at six furlongs: There will be plenty of pace with Presidio Heights and El Dorado Shooter in the field.

If Presidio Heights and El Dorado Shooter compromise each other's chances, Halo Cat could be the horse to benefit and close from off the pace.

Put your trust in Sise

During a career that spans just six races, Ide Rather, a 4-year-old gelding, remains eligible for a two-other-than allowance and has neither raced on grass nor run beyond 1 1/16 miles. His Tomlinson ratings for turf and distance indicate he is not particularly well bred either for grass or to run a marathon.

His jockey, Cesar Dealba, is a seven-pound apprentice who has ridden only 20 races all year.

So what is Ide Rather doing entered in Saturday's $100,000 Greenwood Handicap, a 1 1/2-mile turf race that is the top distance grass event of the season at Philadelphia Park?

Filly trio takes on Mr. Meso

EAST BOSTON, Mass. - Eight Massachusetts-bred 3-year-old colts and fillies run Saturday in the $35,000 Great Mystery Stakes at Suffolk Downs.

The top male in the field figures to be Mr. Meso, back after five months of rest. Mr. Meso surprised many last fall by winning the DeSpirito Stakes - the top open juvenile race in New England. Mr. Meso, trained by Lori Lockhart, won against open company to begin his 3-year-old season, but he was beaten in the Collegian Stakes in January. His two most recent workouts have been bullets.

Docent and X Country return to scene of success

A pair of 5-year-olds who have done quite well when they have traveled to Mountaineer Park for stakes races will try to repeat that formula for success in Saturday's $75,000 Slipton Fell Handicap.

Docent, who won the Mountaineer Mile in his last visit to West Virginia, and X Country, who has been chasing such heavyweights as Lido Palace and Mineshaft since he won last year's Fall Handicap at Mountaineer, head a field of seven older horses in the mile and 70-yard Slipton Fell.

Madrigal answers opportunity's knock

It may pale in comparison to Lou Gehrig replacing Wally Pipp in the New York Yankees' lineup some 80 years ago, but multiple injuries sustained by jockey Clinton Potts in a training accident have opened up a golden window of opportunity for Rodrigo Madrigal Jr.
