With six days' rest, Mariensky wins again

ELMONT, N.Y. - The rain might have been an inconvenience for most of those who showed up at Belmont Park on Saturday, but for trainer Christophe Clement, it represented a glorious opportunity.

Clement decided to bring the 4-year-old filly Mariensky back in Saturday's $200,000 Just a Game Breeders' Cup Handicap only seven days after she won the Grade 2 Sheepshead Bay Handicap. The turn-back in distance from 1 3/8 miles to a mile was rendered moot by the conditions, for Mariensky got the soft turf she covets for the second straight time.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Bird Town did not spot her rivals a head start this time, but the result was still the same.

After overcoming a stumbling start to win the Kentucky Oaks five weeks ago, Bird Town had a far smoother trip in Friday's $250,000 at Belmont Park. She needed it, because Lady Tak tested her in the final yards, but Bird Town held on to win by a head.

Shine Again tough again

ELMONT, N.Y. - No one would have been surprised had the connections of Shine Again elected to breed her following a most successful 5-year-old campaign last year. After all, she is a two-time winner of the Grade 1 Ballerina Handicap and was just a few thousand dollars shy of being a millionaire.
