Turban figures to get the trip

AUBURN, Wash. - Turban heads an accomplished field of eight in Sunday's $75,000 Budweiser Emerald Handicap at a mile.

The Budweiser Emerald field includes Sabertooth, who won last year's Grade 3 Longacres Mile; Moonlight Meeting, the Mile runner-up who was named the meet's top handicap horse; and I'madrifter, a Grade 3 stakes winner in northern California.

Raylene goes after sweep

CALGARY, Alberta - Raylene, the 122-pound highweight, gives away nine pounds to each of her six rivals in Sunday's $40,000 Penny Ridge at Stampede Park as she attempts to sweep the three stakes for 3-year-old fillies at this meet.

The closing-day feature over 1 1/16 miles appears to belong to Raylene, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Tabasco Cat who captured the Mount Royal and Lilac with ease here this spring.

Raylene rated just off the pace in both stakes and displayed the same stretch kick that carried her to a divisional championship in Alberta last year.

'Soul' seeks 1st stakes win

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Perfect Soul, arguably the top turf runner at Woodbine, will seek his first stakes victory in Sunday's Grade 2 King Edward Breeders' Cup Handicap.

Perfect Soul, an Irish-bred son of Sadler's Wells, began to blossom last summer for trainer Roger Attfield, when he won two allowance races and finished a lapped-on second in the Grade 1 Niagara Breeders' Cup Handicap.

Stratoplan to prep against older horses

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Stratoplan has some growing up to do - and he'll need to do it quickly this weekend.

With the $75,000 Burnaby Breeders' Cup coming up June 28, trainer Rob VanOverschot was looking for a prep race for Stratoplan, who was an impressive winner of a maiden race May 31.

With nowhere else to run, VanOverschot elected to try Stratoplan against older horses in a $35,000 optional race that goes as the ninth race Sunday.

Stablemates sharp for Emerald Bud

AUBURN, Wash. - Who do you like, Sabertooth or Turban?

That's not the only question that handicappers will face in Sunday's $75,000 Emerald Budweiser Handicap at a mile, but it may be the thorniest.

The 4-year-old Turban beat his 5-year-old stablemate Sabertooth in last month's Fox Sports Net Handicap at 6 1/2 furlongs, but that was Sabertooth's first outing since he posted back-to-back wins in last season's Grade 3 Longacres Mile and the Washington Championship. Now that both horses have a recent race under their girths, who should be preferred?

Phase II has some on move

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After the spring meet ends at Churchill Downs, many trainers simply stay put for the duration of the summer and early fall, content to van their active runners to tracks operating in this region.

When a stable actually leaves for another track, the destination normally is Saratoga, Arlington, or Ellis Park. But at least three trainers have plotted a different course for this summer: Walt Bindner Jr. is taking 14 horses to Woodbine in Canada, while Morris Nicks and Terry Brennan are moving their stables to Louisiana Downs.

Restoration lineup in flux

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Monmouth Park got hit with another heavy rainstorm Thursday night into Friday morning. An additional inch of rain soaked the turf course, which has been inundated with more than nine inches of rain since the meet began May 24.

The uncertainty over the condition of the course had trainers in a quandary at entry time Friday morning for Sunday's $50,000 Restoration Stakes for 3-year-olds at one mile on grass.

Incentives spelled out for Haskell

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Monmouth Park has a history of going the extra mile - and spending additional dollars - to support the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational.

The premier event of the meet, it takes place this year on Aug. 3. A $1 million race for 3-year-olds, it has become the best-attended racing day in New Jersey, having attracted crowds in excess of 45,000 for each of the last two renewals.

Edwards puts honeymoon plans on hold

MIAMI - Trainer Oliver "Buddy" Edwards exchanged wedding vows with Janet Willett on Friday evening, but the honeymoon will have to wait. That's because Edwards plans to be on hand at Calder to saddle Lost Appeal as one of the favorites in Sunday's $40,000 Bimini Flyer Stakes, an overnight stakes at 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf.
