Churchill pick six pays $1.1M

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Four improbable winners followed by two lukewarm favorites at Churchill Downs Wednesday produced a track record pick six payoff of more than $1.1 million for a single ticket purchased at an Idaho casino.

Churchill officials said the winning ticket was purchased through a Maine wagering hub that services the Idaho casino. The winning bettor wagered $6,720 and singled one of the winning favorites in the sequence on the winning ticket, which was worth $1,168,136.80 before federal and state taxes.

Canterbury track report

SHAKOPEE, Minn. - The Quarter Horse Quick Buds put together two of the most eye-catching performances of this meet last week. Quick Buds captured a division of the Northlands Futurity Trials by 1 1/4 lengths on Saturday, just two days after he won a maiden race by more than two lengths. Quick Buds will next run in the Northlands Futurity on July 5 - if trainer Jerry Dobbs can avoid the itch to run the undefeated grey 2-year-old before then.

Summer season has Texas twist

With Texas-breds in the opening night Harris County Stakes and five stakes races for Texas-breds during the Texas Summer Showdown on July 25, the summer Quarter Horse season at Sam Houston Race Park has a Lone Star flavor.

On opening night Friday, a solid field will start in the $10,000 Harris County Stakes over 350 yards. MJ Gold, the fastest qualifier in 2002's Grade 1 Sam Houston Futurity, is one of five 3-year-olds in this field of eight distaffers.

Holiday weekend is stakes-a-thon

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - It's not uncommon for a lull to follow the Queen's Plate, as the excitement surrounding Canada's most famous horse race quickly dissipates in the dog days of summer.

But there will be little time for post-Plate depression this year as Woodbine swings back with six straight days of racing, beginning Friday, and many stakes will be offered.

The added-money races begin Saturday with the $166,500 Clarendon, a 5 1/2-furlong race for Canadian-bred 2-year-olds, which attracted a field of eight.

Reinvigorated Tohill back for summer visit

PLEASANTON, Calif. - For the next nine days, jockey Ken Tohill will be at home, maybe for the last time, as he rides at the Alameda County Fair.

The 41-year-old rider, whose first victory came here in 1979, is riding on the fair circuit this summer, but his future may lie elsewhere.

"I'm going to stay the summer and get everything in order," he said.

Tohill, who has 1,507 victories, has found a new home riding at Albuquerque, and he plans to return to New Mexico to ride at Sunland as well.

Simmerdown Now, winner of last year's Woodland Heritage for Saskatchewan-bred fillies, won a prep race for the six-furlong Harrison two weeks ago.

Simmerdown Now had started the season at Assiniboia Downs but after a ninth and a fourth against $7,500 claimers she returned here to score a front-running victory.

Fairly Ransom placed on hold

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Fairly Ransom, the winner of 3 of 5 starts in France, is likely to pass Sunday's $200,000 Cinema Breeders' Cup Handicap at Hollywood Park in favor of the $100,000 Oceanside Stakes at Del Mar on July 23, trainer Ron McAnally said.

McAnally said he was not pleased with the way Fairly Ransom finished a seven-furlong workout in 1:30 under jockey Alex Solis last Sunday. "He got a little tired the other day when Alex worked him," McAnally said.
