Ipi Tombe wins by an easy half-length

Ipi Tombe ($2.80) wins the Grade 3, $164,400 Locust Grove Handicap by a half-length at Churchill Downs on Saturday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Without ever feeling the whip of an ultra-confident Pat Day, the star African import Ipi Tombe made a successful United States debut Saturday at Churchill Downs by winning the Grade 3, $164,400 by a half-length margin that conceals the extent of her superiority.

"Nice and cozy," co-owner Barry Irwin said minutes after Ipi Tombe raced to the 12th victory of her 14-race career. "Her next race is a handicap, too."

Stakes winner Devastating retired

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Devastating, a 5-year-old who was a multiple stakes winner of $409,858, has been retired.

Robert King, who trains Devastating for the Orange Blossom Stable of Ralph and Linda Bodine, said the mare had bled badly when finishing fourth in her last start, the six-furlong Ballade here June 11.

"She'd had her little problems here and there, but that was the first major thing," said King.

Maple Syrple trounces males in Clarendon

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Maple Syrple, an impressive winner of her debut here May 31, took on the boys in the $166,500 Clarendon Stakes here Saturday and it was no contest.

Under a confident ride from jockey Patrick Husbands, Maple Syrple stalked the pace of Imperial Alydeed for the first three-eighths of a mile and then pulled away to win the 5 1/2-furlong Clarendon by 3 1/2 lengths in a quick 1:04.03.

Just in Case Jimmy, one of five maidens in the field of seven 2-year-olds, came from just off the pace to finish second, 1 1/2 lengths ahead of first-time starter Gold Gunner.

No Comprende will be flying late

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - No Comprende, a convincing winner of the allowance prep for the Dominion Day Handicap, should be running well late in Tuesday's $226,000 Dominion Day, a 1 1/4-mile race at Woodbine.

No Comprende raced mainly on the grass in 2002 for trainer Jim Smith. This year he has raced exclusively on the main track with positive results.

Rare Friends a fresh danger

FORT ERIE, Ontario - Crack sprinter Rare Friends, a Canadian champion at 2, is the headliner in Tuesday's six-furlong Parnitha Stakes, one of two $60,000 supporting features to the $250,000 Bison City.

The Parnitha drew a field of five while the Centre Stage Anne attracted seven entrants. Both races are for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds and up, with the Centre Stage Anne for fillies and mares at six furlongs.

Let's Go Rusty an upstart to watch

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - If Lord Nelson runs his usual race in the Grade 3, $100,000 Lieutenant Governors' at Hastings Tuesday, he won't get beat. Lord Nelson, who was bred by his owners Russell and Lois Bennett, dominated the local older handicap division in 2001 and 2002 and has been exceptional at the nine-furlong distance of the Lieutenant Governors'. But, his trainer, Dino Condilenios, doesn't discount the chances of Let's Go Rusty, who he will also saddle in Tuesday's race.

Too Late Now spots weight

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Too Late Now and Seeking the Ring, the one-two finishers in the June 8 Labatt Woodbine Oaks, will renew their rivalry at Fort Erie on Tuesday in the $250,000 Labatt Bison City.

The Bison City, the second leg of the Triple Tiara for Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies, drew a field of six and headlines a Canada Day card that also includes the Centre Stage Anne and Parnitha stakes.

A $350,000 bonus would go to a filly that can sweep the Triple Tiara, which concludes with the Wonder Where at 1 1/4 miles on turf at Woodbine Aug. 4.

EDMONTON, Alberta - It's no secret that Taiaslew is the dominant performer in this region as the 3-year-olds continue to sort themselves out on the path to the the Aug. 23 Canadian Derby.

Willa On the Move takes Xtra Heat

ELMONT, N.Y. - It took an assist from the stewards, but Willa On the Move finally became a stakes winner on Friday at Belmont Park.

Though Willa On the Move was beaten a nose by longshot Redhead Riot in the $65,550 , she was moved up to first after the stewards deemed that Redhead Riot interfered with Willa on the Move in the stretch. It was 8 3-4 lengths back to Fresh Tracks in third.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Private Chef made a seamless jump from maiden winner to stakes winner when he pulled an upset in the Grade 3 Will Rogers Stakes May 25.

Sunday, Private Chef will attempt to become a multiple stakes winner when he starts as the favorite in the $200,000 Cinema Breeders' Cup Handicap at Hollywood Park.

Unbeaten in two starts, Private Chef is trained by John Shirreffs, who says the gelding has plenty of untapped potential.
