Softer spot for Ocean Drive

ELMONT, N.Y. - Declining an invitation to run in Saturday's $750,000 American Oaks at Hollywood Park, trainer Todd Pletcher has found a much easier spot to get Ocean Drive's summer campaign started.

Ocean Drive, a winner of four of five career starts, seeks her fourth stakes victory in Wednesday's $65,000 Gaviola Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Belmont Park. She will face seven rivals in the 1 1/16-mile race, scheduled for the Widener turf course.

Three-peat for Krz Ruckus?

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Krz Ruckus will try to win the seven-furlong Overskate Stakes for the third straight year Wednesday at Woodbine.

Krz Ruckus dueled up front in his customary style to take the last two runnings of the Overskate with determination, and will have to run his "A" race again to beat a strong field. He was sharp in winning his season opener, the five-furlong Briartic Handicap, but then ran a rare clunker in the Grade 3 Vigil Handicap.

Missy's Joy light on racing, not talent

OCEANPORT, N.J. - While short on experience, Missy's Joy offers the greatest upside potential among those in Wednesday's $37,000 allowance feature.

Missy's Joy has made only four career starts and faces rivals who have been to the post as many as 24 times. It could be a triumph of youth - Missy's Joy is one of two 3-year-olds in the field - over experience.

Missy's Joy flashed early speed in her last start, a fourth-place finish in a muddy Monmouth allowance race on June 5. Trupon On, the winner, went on to run second in the Crank It Up Stakes June 21

Catalano barn busts out

CHICAGO - They were not crying for him on the Arlington backstretch. More like looking on with curiosity ranging from morbid to rabid. How long would trainer Wayne Catalano's losing streak last?

No longer than Saturday, it turned out. Catalano, whose runners dominated the early portion of this meet, snapped a streak of 25 straight losers when Entrepreneurship won on Saturday's program. The hole in the dike having been opened, Catalano flooded Sunday's card with three winners. The last of them, an Argentine import named Ajedrez, looks like a horse of stakes quality.

Big-time 'Action' for small stable

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Owner Jerry Edelist has been in the racing game, on a small scale, for the majority of the past 30 years.

But until Dressed for Action emerged a nose winner here in Sunday's $166,500 Ontario Damsel, Edelist had yet to experience the thrill of owning a stakes winner.

"It's a great feeling," said Edelist, who races as Shoestring Stable and had watched Dressed for Action defeat eight other Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies in the 6 1/2-furlong turf race.
