Still not race ready

ELMONT, N.Y. - While it has taken more than six months for Sky Mesa to make his 3-year-old debut - which he will do in Sunday's Dwyer Stakes at Belmont Park - he is still ahead of schedule when compared to the other Eclipse Award finalists in last year's juvenile division.

Out with the old - but first a party

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sunday marks the end of an era in Churchill Downs lore.

Minutes after the final race is run Sunday evening, work crews will begin removing keepsakes and other items from the clubhouse in preparation for the demolition that eventually will lead to the most sweeping physical changes in the history of this 129-year-old facility.

One unbeaten streak must end

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The last time Dogwood Stable had a 2-year-old win the Bashford Manor Stakes, the colt ended up a classic winner.

Summer Squall won the 1989 Bashford Manor by four lengths before finishing second in the Kentucky Derby and winning the Preakness the following spring. Let there be little doubt that Dogwood syndicate members would dearly love to see Limehouse embark on a similar path Sunday when the unbeaten colt races against five other 2-year-olds in the 102nd running of the Grade 3, $150,000 Bashford Manor at Churchill Downs.

'Renegade' barn confident

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Unable to gain a berth in Saturday's $750,000 American Oaks, Rutters Renegade starts in Sunday's $100,000 Flawlessly Stakes at Hollywood Park.

Trainer Gary Mandella said he believes a win in the one-mile turf stakes will show that Rutters Renegade is among the top of her division.

After a second-place finish in the Senorita Stakes May 17, Rutters Renegade started in the Grade 2 Honeymoon Handicap June 7 where a win or placing could have earned a berth in the American Oaks.

Jockey ends 12-year hiatus

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Frank Olivares will end a 12-year retirement when he rides Laffit, a horse he formerly trained, in Sunday's fifth race at Hollywood Park.

Olivares, 53, announced last month that was folding his training stable to return to riding for the first time since December 1990. For the past several weeks, he has been a fixture on the backstretch, exercising horses.

"I'll be excited. I wish it was today," Olivares said Friday on the backstretch. "I'm anxious to get going. I've been getting busier and busier each morning."

Lukas makes it Debutante win No. 5

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Trainer D. Wayne Lukas had all his bases covered. With a furlong to go in Friday's $110,900 Debutante Stakes at Churchill Downs, Be Gentle had pulled away from every other filly in the field - except for her Lukas-trained stablemate Renaissance Lady.

At the finish, Be Gentle was still in front to prevail by 1 1/4 lengths over Renaissance Lady and give Lukas a record fifth Debutante win. Sweet Jo Jo finished another 4 1/2 lengths back in third in a field of eight 2-year-old fillies.

Calder: Sea Pleasure bests elders

MIAMI - Sea Pleasure, the only 3-year-old in the field and the longest price on the board at 15-1, rallied from last to outfinish Stauh by three-quarters of a length to upset Friday's $100,000 Americana Handicap at Calder.

Sea Pleasure trailed his five older rivals during the opening half-mile of the 1 1/8-mile Americana, remained at the back of the pack until entering the stretch, split horses, and finished with a surge to run down Stauch in the final strides. Stauch moved clear in early stretch. He finished 1 3/4 lengths clear of Mr. Livingston, who ran third.
