OMAHA, Neb. - Horsemen's Park closes out its four-day summer racing festival on Sunday with a strong field of 10 entered in the $100,000 Omaha Handicap.
FORT ERIE, Ontario - One string was snapped and another extended when the dust cleared after the latest pair of two-furlong dashes here.
On Monday, the filly Storming on Merit reared at the break and finished last of nine in a $25,000 claimer for
2-year-old fillies. She had won her three previous starts, all here and all $25,000 claimers for 2-year-old fillies. Miss Docscott was the wire-to-wire winner.
On Tuesday, Pembroke Hall made it 4 for 4 in 2003. Pembroke Hall won the final quarter-mile race last year, meaning he has five consecutive victories.
Spending Sundays at River Downs has been a productive exercise for the Thistledown-based team of trainer Tim Hamm and jockey Julio Felix. Last Sunday, Hamm and Felix won the Cincinnatian Stakes, and they are back this week with a good chance to win the $40,000 Tah Dah Stakes for Ohio-bred 2-year-old fillies.
Hamm entered three in the 5 1/2-furlong Tah Dah but may run only one, because Felix was named to ride all of them. The most logical of the trio is Barnsy, who won her maiden race at first asking in open company at Churchill Downs, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 70.
Letithappencaptain will return to the distance of her most impressive win - as well as the statebred ranks - in the $50,000 Fantasia at Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, La., on Sunday.
The six-furlong race for 3-year-old fillies bred in Louisiana drew five statebred stakes winners, the richest of whom is Letithappencaptain.
AUBURN, Wash. - Condotierri takes a while to get rolling, but he can be hard to resist once he hits his stride.
That statement seems to apply equally to his running style and racing schedule. Last season at 2, Condotierri, a stoutly bred son of Candy Stripes and the Silver Hawk mare Bermuda Petrel, didn't win his maiden until his third start July 21. But he ended up winning Emerald's richest race for juveniles, the $100,000 Gottstein Futurity at 1 1/16 miles, in his fifth and final start of the year in September.
VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Ole Nielson of Canmor Farms and Lola McCarthy have been very successful in buying yearling fillies in Kentucky and bringing them back to the Pacific Northwest. Ever Lasting, Lasting Code, and Lasting Chance are just a few of the many horses they have won stakes races with in this neck of the woods, and it looks like they have another nice one in Stole One.
She figures to be a short price when she faces six other 2-year-old fillies in the $35,000 Timber Music Stakes Sunday at Hastings.
ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Mike Mareina was working as an assistant to trainer Loren Rettele when he first came to Woodbine, with Golden Act for the 1980 Canadian International.
Golden Act finished fourth that day while attempting to repeat his 1979 International win, but the trip left a favorable impression on Mareina.
That memory played an indirect role in his move here this spring as private trainer for Kuehne Racing.
ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Gemini Dream and San Diego Blowout are poised to hook up in what could be a memorable speed duel Sunday at Woodbine in the $134,875 Colin Stakes, a six-furlong sprint for 2-year-olds.
Gemini Dream, trained by Arthur Silvera, finished third May 11 in his debut, a 4 1/2-furlong maiden special weight race.
WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Alberta Derby winner Taiaslew will be odds-on to win the $35,000 Derby Trial at Assiniboia Downs Sunday.
Taiaslew, a 3-year-old gelding by Slewdledo, comes into the race off three straight wins, his most recent a romping score in the Grade 3 Alberta Derby June 14 at the Derby Trial distance of 1 1/16 miles.
Taiaslew, trained by Greg Tracy, has won 7 of 8 lifetime starts.
Prior to the Alberta Derby, he won the President's and Hoofprint on My Heart this year. Last year at 2 he won the Edmonton Juvenile, Birdcatcher, and Canadian Juvenile.
MIAMI - What can Saturday's $500,000 Smile Sprint Handicap do for an encore?
Last year Orientate came to town and easily won in a field that included nationally renowned sprinters Echo Eddie and Crafty C.T., and then went on to win the Breeders' Cup Sprint and earn an Eclipse Award as the nation's outstanding sprinter.
