Congaree gets his first career victory at 1 1/4 miles in Sunday's Grade 1, $750,000 Hollywood Gold Cup, winning by three lengths in 2:00.48.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Midway through Sunday's $750,000 , trainer Bob Baffert was afraid to look at the toteboard.

Congaree, his hope for a second Gold Cup win, had just taken the lead after six furlongs in 1:09.52, a pace Baffert feared was too fast.

"I wasn't looking," Baffert said. "I thought, Let's see how good he is."

It turned out that Congaree was very good.

Winning his fourth stakes of the year, Congaree easily handled a strong field in the Gold Cup, winning over 1 1/4 miles for the first time in his career.

During rides rail to Swaps win

Horsephotos
During comes again along the rail to defeat Ten Most Wanted (third from right) by a head in Sunday's Grade 2, $400,000 Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park. Eye of the Tiger (second from right) and Outta Here dead-heated for third.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - He was first passed by Ten Most Wanted, then Eye of the Tiger. Never having won beyond a mile, nor having ever raced 1 1/8 miles, the situation looked dire for During in Sunday's $400,000 at Hollywood Park.

But During, clinging to a rail path that jockey Jerry Bailey had been tipped off was the best part of the track, bravely re-rallied to post an 8-1 upset against his more highly regarded rivals in the Grade 2 race for 3-year-olds.

Funny Cide tops Haskell invitees

Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Funny Cide headlines the list of 26 horses extended invitations to the Grade 1, $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on Aug. 3.

Trainer Barclay Tagg has targeted the Haskell as the gelding's first start since running third in the Belmont Stakes.

Monmouth also invited Belmont winner Empire Maker but trainer Bobby Frankel will likely decline the offer. Frankel will probably send Peace Rules, the winner of the Louisiana Derby and Blue Grass Stakes.
