Tough spot for Watch Out World

VALLEJO, Calif. - Trainer Armando Lage will launch phase 2 of Watch Out World's career Saturday in the $40,000-added Fairfield Stakes at the Solano County Fair. He did not pick an easy spot for the talented 3-year-old filly's return to the races.

The Jerry Hollendorfer-trained Christmas Time, winner of the Emeryville Stakes on May 17 at Bay Meadows, is the one to beat in the six-furlong race, but Lage isn't afraid.

"I was surprised by the entries," he said. "I was expecting it to be a little easier, but I'm not worried. I think she'll run a good, powerful race."

Motion uses Alternate plan

Trainer Graham Motion admits Alternate isn't the horse he really wanted to run in Saturday's Robert G. Dick Memorial Breeders' Cup Handicap. In fact, Alternate has never even won on turf, which puts her at a distinct disadvantage in the 1 3/8-mile grass race at Delaware Park.

But if Motion's hunch is correct, the extra distance she will be asked to run could be what Alternate needs to pull an upset in the $150,000 Robert Dick, one of two stakes on the undercard of a 10-race program highlighted by the $500,000 Delaware Oaks.

Cruising Kat makes belated return to track

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - The Nanaimo Stakes is the feature race of the day at Hastings Saturday, but the best race on the card is the eighth, a non-conditioned allowance sprint for older horses. Six of the eight horses entered are stakes winners, and included in the field is 2002 B.C. Derby winner, Cruising Kat, making his first start of the year.

Off his last, 'Banned' looks hot

Banned in Boston does not have the flashiest pedigree among those in Saturday's $75,000 Regaey Island Stakes on the Ellis Park turf, nor is he even a stakes winner. He has merely won two races, a maiden $50,000 claiming race and an entry-level allowance. Yet he will be a prohibitive favorite against seven opponents in the Regaey Island following a 7 3/4-length romp on turf at Churchill Downs, a performance that earned him a Beyer Speed Figure of 99.

'Mysterious' approaches milestone

FORT ERIE, Ontario - Mysterious Affair, bred and owned by trainer Mort Hardy, will return to Woodbine a millionaire if she wins Saturday's $125,000 Rainbow Connection here at Fort Erie.

Run at five furlongs on the turf course, the Rainbow Connection is the third richest of the 21 stakes offered by the Fort in 2003. It's the feature of a stakes tripleheader that is a prelude to Sunday's $500,000 Prince of Wales, the second jewel of Canada's Triple Crown.

Homecoming for Ms. Lady Rose

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan - Ms. Lady Rose, Saskatchewan's 2002 horse of the year and top older mare, returns to her home track, Marquis Downs, for Saturday's $5,000 Mademoiselle, and should be well backed to score her first victory of the year.

This year, Ms. Lady Rose has tried the best Winnipeg's Assiniboia Downs has to offer with moderate success, twice finishing third in allowance races before running an even fifth in the La Verendrye.

The Mademoiselle, for fillies and mares, is at one mile, which should suit Ms. Lady Rose very nicely.

Added Edge returns in prep

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Saturday's Bold Venture Handicap at Woodbine may seem an unusual spot for the return of Added Edge, who was Canada's champion 2-year-old and a horse of the year finalist after going undefeated in four 2002 outings.

Added Edge, owned by Team Valor Stable and Robert Wilson and trained by Mark Casse, will be facing most of Ontario's top older sprinters while making his first start since Jan. 18 in the 6 1/2-furlong Bold Venture.

Big three ready for Delicada rematch

BOSSIER CITY, La. - Due to Win, Blue Guru, and McKinney, the top three finishers in last year's Delicada Stakes, all return for this season's Delicada on Saturday. The 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares offers a $50,000 purse.
