Canterbury returns with limited live fans, 10 percent pick 5 takeout

Coady Photography
Trainer Robertino Diodoro plans to maintain a 40-horse string at Belmont Park for the spring-summer meet.

Canterbury Park becomes the latest North American racetrack to come back online following the global coronavirus pandemic when it starts a 52-day meeting on Wednesday.

The Shakopee, Minn., track was scheduled to begin racing in early May before COVID-19 slammed into the racing industry and the rest of America. Canterbury managed to open its backstretch May 8 and has attracted a large enough horse population, at least on the Thoroughbred side, to comfortably conduct this abbreviated season, director of racing Andrew Offerman said.

Up in Smoke's stakes win has trainer Weaver thinking big

Ryan Thompson/Coglianese Photos
Up in Smoke's victory in the Game Face on Saturday at Gulfstream may propel her to the Test or Prioress at Saratoga.

Saturday’s Gulfstream Park card featured Up in Smoke’s last-to-first two-length victory over even-money favorite Boerne in the Game Face over a track that favored her come-from-behind style of running throughout the day. Volatile's explosive Aristides win puts him on path to the big sprints

Coady Photography
Volatile earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 112 for this romp in the Aristides Stakes at Churchill on Saturday.

It’s very difficult to feel bad for Steve Asmussen, even after the Hall of Fame trainer went 1 for 14 last week to remain one victory shy of 737 Churchill wins, a number that will tie him with Dale Romans as the all-time leading trainer in track history.

“It’s been a little bit frustrating not getting there yet,” Asmussen said.

Maxfield to run in Blue Grass Stakes, skip Belmont Stakes

Coady Photography
Maxfield was one of three stakes winners on Saturday's Churchill card produced by daughters of Bernardini.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Trainer Brendan Walsh said Monday that Maxfield will skip the Belmont Stakes to wait instead for the Blue Grass Stakes on July 11 at Keeneland, the colt’s home base.

Maxfield, a Godolphin homebred undefeated in three starts, figured no worse than second choice behind Tiz the Law in the June 20 Belmont and is widely considered one of the three favorites for the Sept. 5 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, along with Tiz the Law and Honor A. P. His defection figures to leave Tiz the Law a heavy Belmont favorite.
