WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Passionate Bird will be heavily favored when she invades from Canterbury Park to take on eight other fillies and mares in the $35,000 Winnipeg Sun Stakes going 1 1/16 miles Sunday.

In her most recent race, the one-mile Queen's Handicap at Horsemen's Park in Omaha on July 12, Passionate Bird pressed the pace early before opening up and holding on to win by 1 1/2 lengths with something left.

She did the same thing two races back in the one-mile Minnesota HBPA Mile over the turf at Canterbury Park on July 5, winning by two lengths.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Wake at Noon, Canada's reigning Horse of the Year and champion sprinter, will try to win his second straight route race Sunday at Woodbine in the $136,500 Seagram Cup Stakes.

A seven-horse field entered the 1 1/16-mile race, the eighth race on a 10-race card. The Grade 1 Haskell Invitational from Monmouth Park will be simulcast.

DEL MAR, Calif. - For the second time in the Del Mar meeting that began on July 23, there is a double carryover. There were no winning tickets in Thursday's pick six, leaving a carryover of $524,087 for Friday's eight-race program.

The pick six covers the third through eighth races on Friday. Here is a glance at the changes and leading contenders.

SANTA ROSA, Calif. - My Captain ($8.20) allowed Trickey Trevor to win the pace duel, then pulled away down the lane to capture the $45,090 Ernest Finley Handicap at the Sonoma County Fair on Thursday.

My Captain was a length behind Trickey Trevor through a 21.95 opening quarter. He pulled within a head after a 44.09 half mile. He opened up in the lane, defeating late-closing Texas Chili by two lengths in 1:08.45 for six furlongs.

"That's just what the boss wanted," winning rider Francisco Duran said. "He said sit as long as you can then just let him go on."

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Trainer Phil Johnson has not bought into Bobby Frankel-mania.

When Johnson was getting Volponi ready for last October's Breeders' Cup Classic, Johnson figured the horse to beat was Evening Attire and not Medaglia d'Oro, who went off the 5-2 favorite. As it turned out, Volponi was the horse to beat as he romped to a 6 1/2-length victory over Medaglia d'Oro at odds of 43-1.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Harlan's Holiday appears in the entries for Saturday's Grade 1, $750,000 Whitney Handicap, but it is unlikely that he'll appear in the starting gate.

Trainer Todd Pletcher said he wanted to buy more time to think it over, but he is leaning more toward scratching and pointing Harlan's Holiday to the $300,000 Saratoga Breeders' Cup on Aug. 16. Pletcher said he would consider running Harlan's Holiday in the Whitney should probable favorite Medaglia d'Oro not run. It cost owner Jack Wolf $3,500 to enter Harlan's Holiday.

EDMONTON, Alberta - Rindanica will be seeking his third straight victory when a field of five 3-year-olds meets in Saturday's $40,000 Count Lathum at Northlands Park.

The 1 5/16-mile Count Lathum is the final prep for the $150,000 Canadian Derby at 1 3/8 miles here Aug. 23.

Rindanica, owned by Rick Robertson and trained by Riley Rycroft, is coming off wins here in the 6 1/2-furlong Western Canada and the 1 1/16-mile Ky Alta under his regular rider, Perry Winters. He will carry high weight of 119 pounds.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Lady's Jewel, a triple stakes winner at 3, will likely be favored when she takes on six other fillies and mares in Saturday's feature at Hastings.

Lady's Jewel, a 5-year-old homebred daughter of Baron de Vaux, certainly isn't eligible for the non-winners-of-$3,000 other than maiden or claiming clause of this 1 1/16-mile optional race, so she will run for a $35,000 claiming price.

AUBURN, Wash. - Americas Pride will shoot for a third consecutive victory when she faces five other 2-year-old fillies in Saturday's $35,000 Knights Choice Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs at Emerald Downs.

Americas Pride, an Oregon-bred by the first-year sire Baquero, graduated from the maiden ranks here in her fourth start on June 21. In that race, she led past every pole to dispatch $16,000 company by 3 1/2 lengths in a swift 57.80 seconds for five furlongs.

DEL MAR, Calif. - Atlantic Ocean had more trouble than success in major stakes on turf at Hollywood Park earlier this year.

Atlantic Ocean finished second, a neck behind Quero Quero, in the Honeymoon Breeders' Cup Handicap on June 7 after being stuck in traffic on the final turn. In the American Oaks on July 5, she ran third to the world-class Dimitrova despite traffic problems through the stretch.

With racing having moved to Del Mar, Atlantic Ocean can start anew when she runs in Saturday's $150,000 San Clemente Handicap at one mile on turf.
