Classic an easy score for Lord Nelson

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Lord Nelson, under confident handling by Frank Fuentes, scored a decisive three-length victory in the $72,436 British Columbia Cup Classic, the feature race of seven stakes on B.C. Cup Day at Hastings on a beautiful Monday afternoon.

Sent off as the 1-2 favorite, Lord Nelson forced the early pace set by Leloup, took control on the middle of the turn, and was ridden out down the lane. Last year's Classic winner, Vernon Invader, rallied late to finish a nonthreatening second.

Arco's Gold taking another shot at Wando

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer John Ross already might have seen more than enough of Wando this year.

But that won't stop Ross from sending out Arco's Gold for Saturday's $500,000 Breeders' Stakes at Woodbine, where he will attempt to derail Wando's Canadian Triple Crown bid.

A victory in Saturday's Breeders', a 1 1/2-mile turf race for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds, would be worth $550,000 in bonus money to Wando's owner, Gustav Schickedanz, including a $50,000 award as the colt's breeder.

As of Tuesday morning, Wando was slated to face six rivals.

Closers edge in small-field speedfest

AUBURN, Wash. - Though only five horses entered Thursday's 5 1/2-furlong feature for 3-year-olds at Emerald Downs, there will be no shortage of speed.

Of the five, all of whom are eligible to be claimed for $16,000 to $14,000, three are confirmed front-runners. Skookum Pass has three gate-to-wire wins at the meet, while Slew the Enemy and Jumpingjupiter have each won twice from on or close to the early pace.

The surfeit of speed could give a tactical advantage to Stately Jack Flash and Dawg Fan, both of whom prefer to come from slightly off the pace.

Sulamani is coming

Arlington Park landed a big fish on Tuesday when Godolphin announced that Sulamani will run in the Arlington Million on Aug. 16.

Although travel plans have not yet been finalized, the 4-year-old son of Hernando is scheduled to arrive in Chicago this weekend, according Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford.

Sulamani's participation in the Million is something of a surprise as he was expected to remain at his home base in Newmarket to prepare for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, a race in which he finished second last year.
