Distinct Vision eyes upset win

Distinct Vision, a former claimer who has easily won his last two starts, both in allowance company, seeks his first stakes win in Saturday's $100,000 Larry R. Riviello President's Cup at Philadelphia Park.

Thirteen 3-year-olds were entered in the mile and 70-yard President's Cup.

Laurel Park: Eight in Dave's Friend

Older sprinters face off in Saturday's $50,000 Dave's Friend Stakes.

Eight entered the six-furlong Dave's Friend, including last year's runner-up, Deer Run.

Pioneer Boy is in top form for owner Michael Gill and trainer John Robb. The gelding won the Rapid Transit Stakes at Canterbury Park on July 19 in his last start. He worked sharply at Laurel on Aug. 1, covering five furlongs in a bullet 58.20 seconds.

Pioneer Boy and Crossing Point both have early speed, which could set up things nicely for Deer Run.

Older foes try to derail Megan's Halo

EAST BOSTON, Mass. - Ever since Megan's Halo got a chance to stretch her legs, her competition at Suffolk Downs hasn't had a chance. She tries for her fifth straight victory Saturday in the $35,000 Highland Happening Stakes.

Maturity has played a role in the 3-year-old filly's streak, but it's clear the chance to go around two turns has hit her between the eyeballs.

Turf course proves boost in filling race cards

SAN MATEO, Calif. - The availability of turf racing has helped fill races at the Bay Meadows Fair.

On Saturday's card, three turf races are carded with 27 entries, including 12 in a $12,500 claimer.

"Grass racing is great. Everyone in the country runs on grass the whole summer except us," said Aggie Ordonez, assistant to Brent Sumja, who saddled the winner and third-place finisher in Wednesday's first turf race of the fair season.

The lack of turf racing during the summer has long been one of the primary complaints of northern California trainers.
