Much still up in air regarding Santa Anita fall meet

Emily Shields
Santa Anita is scheduled to start its fall meet on Sept. 11, but might push back the starting date one or two weeks.

Santa Anita concluded a six-month winter-spring meeting Sunday – which was interrupted from late March to mid-May because of the coronavirus outbreak – without a clear indication of when racing would resume in September.

Track officials said Sunday that the start of the meeting could be delayed from its scheduled date of Sept. 11 to later in the month to provide a gap following the conclusion of the Del Mar summer season on Sept. 7.

Vekoma came off a long layoff to win the Sir Shackleton Stakes by 3 3/4 lengths on March 28.

The coronavirus pandemic has wreaked havoc with stakes schedules throughout the country and could also ultimately impact the marquee event on Gulfstream Park’s summer program, the Summit of Speed, which features the Grade 2 Princess Rooney, a Win and You’re’ In race for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

Wind of Change works for Sunday's Lone Star Mile

Wind of Change, who worked a bullet half-mile Sunday at Gulfstream Park, was among nine older horses entered the same morning in the $75,000 Lone Star Park Mile. The race highlights a card of three open-company stakes this coming Sunday.

Wind of Change breezed in 46.80 seconds, and the move was the fastest of 81 at the distance. He is shortening up from 1 1/8 miles. Wind of Change ran fifth at the trip in the $75,000 Sunday Silence on May 17 at Gulfstream. Before that race, he won an allowance at the track. Hector Berrios has the mount for trainer Amador Sanchez.

More Ice finds more modest company in Louisiana Downs allowance

More Ice, who ran in last year’s Santa Anita Derby, returns to turf Wednesday for the fourth race at Louisiana Downs.

The optional $17,500 claiming race for 3-year-olds and up carries second-level allowance conditions. It will be run at about a mile on the grass. There are two other turf routes with similar conditions on the card, with one for fillies and mares and the other for horses bred in Louisiana.

Diodoro hopes for better from Violent Ridge

Trainer Robertino Diodoro envisions a different kind of trip for Violent Ridge in Wednesday’s seventh race at Lone Star Park than the horse had in his most recent start.

The feature is a first-level allowance for 3-year-olds and up over 6 1/2 furlongs.

Violent Ridge enters off a fifth-place finish at this same level May 24 at Lone Star. He was favored in the six-furlong race off a strong meet at Oaklawn Park, but ran an unconventional race.

Mr Freeze redirected to Runhappy Met Mile

Ronnie Betor
Mr Freeze was originally slated for this Saturday's Stephen Foster at Churchill.

LOUISVILLE, Ky, – Dale Romans considered Mr Freeze for the 1 1/8-mile Stephen Foster before deferring to the July 4 Runhappy Metropolitan Mile at Belmont Park. The 5-year-old horse was scheduled to work Tuesday at Churchill after having last breezed June 6.

“We’re going to New York because of the shorter distance,” said Romans. “The mile is just a better fit.”

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Serengeti Empress will be looking to rebound off an 11th-place finish when she faces heavily favored Midnight Bisou in the Grade 2 Fleur de Lis on Saturday.

Serengeti Empress never saw the lead as the favorite in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom on April 18 at Oaklawn Park and beat a steady retreat. Duly regrouped since then, the speedy 4-year-old filly has breezed five times toward this 1 1/8-mile race.

Owendale looks to climb into heady company in Foster

Coady Photography
Owendale finishes with a rush to take the May 23 Blame Stakes at Churchill.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – There’s refreshing depth in the ranks of older dirt horses in America right now.

Bob Baffert has Maximum Security, Mucho Gusto, Improbable, and McKinzie out in California, primed for a big second half of 2020, while Vekoma and Code of Honor are holding down the fort in New York.

Here in Kentucky, the top dogs are Tom’s d’Etat and By My Standards, the two favorites Saturday in the Grade 2 Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs. But trainer Brad Cox is hoping Owendale can crash the elite, too, by following up on a huge effort in his 4-year-old debut.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Lineups are set for the four graded races that help bring an end to the Churchill Downs spring meet this weekend, with the return of Midnight Bisou being the most noteworthy aspect to the Saturday stakes.

Midnight Bisou, the No. 1-rated horse in the weekly National Thoroughbred Racing Association poll since March 10, will have Mike Smith aboard in her first start since finishing second in the Feb. 29 Saudi Cup when she faces six other fillies and mares in the Grade 2 Fleur de Lis. Serengeti Empress, the 2019 Kentucky Oaks winner, is among the opposition.
