Perfect Drift to face Congaree

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The 10th running of the Kentucky Cup may be the deepest yet. Four of the five races in the series, to be run Saturday at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky., are shaping up with large fields, while the remaining race is expected to feature a showdown between Congaree and Perfect Drift.

I'm a Majek Girl likely sidelined for months

CHICAGO - There were two overnight stakes races for 2-year-olds last week at Arlington. Korbyn Gold looked good winning the Spectacular Bid on Saturday, and I'm a Majek Girl looked even better winning the Top Flight on Friday. But it is possible that those races will have no impact on Arlington's major 2-year-old races on Sept. 27.

Rivals with far different goals

CHICAGO - For Twilight Road, a stakes-quality sprinter-miler, there have been better things than Wednesday's featured eighth race at Arlington Park. There may be more in the not too distant future. For Attack the Books, a 4-year-old allowance-class horse, Wednesday's race is the thing itself.

Aftica threat from the start

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Aftica will try to make all the running in Wednesday's Woodbine headliner, a six-furlong allowance race for Ontario-sired fillies and mares.

Aftica, a 3-year-old trained by Beverly Chubb, finished fourth after stalking the pace on a sloppy strip in an Ontario-sired maiden sprint in her debut June 5. She fared better over a fast track against $40,000 maiden claiming company in her second start July 2, when she finished third after leading until the eighth pole.

Regal Ability has stamina to spare, too

EDMONTON, Alberta - After running in the Canadian Derby, Regal Ability started just once more last year, and he had just two races in 2003 leading up to the $100,000 Speed to Spare at Northlands Park on Saturday.

The grueling 1 3/8-mile distance appeared to be too much for the 4-year-old gelding to overcome, and it was no surprise that Regal Ability, a Don Gilkyson-trained Alberta-bred, was 25-1 at post time.

Breaking cleanly from post 6, Regal Ability surged to the lead as the rest of the field settled in behind, waiting for the opportunity to pounce.

Boozin' Susan ran the five furlongs over good turf in 55.83 seconds and paid $8 as part of the entry trained by Linda Rice.

Thistledown: Floater wins

NORTH RANDALL, Ohio - Floater won the $75,000 Juvenile Stakes by 1 1/2 lengths over Dawn's Revenge. It was 5 3/4 lengths farther back to White Angel Light in third.

Floater had to survive an objection by Lyndon Hannigan, rider of Dawn's Revenge.

Floater, under Mike Rowland, went up to prompt the pacesetting Dawn's Revenge before a half-mile had been run in the 1 1/16-mile race. Entering the stretch, Floater came in a bit under right-handed whipping. Dawn's Revenge checked a bit inside the winner.

Streaking Sharp Miss tries turf

SAN MATEO, Calif. - A stakes winner and a Cinderella type hope to continue their magic in Wednesday's feature race at Bay Meadows.

Sharp Miss, a $25,000 claim in February who won the Fairfield Handicap at the Solano Fair in her last start, and Evil Lady, who has won four straight races while moving up from the $5,000 claiming level, make their turf debuts in a $50,000 optional claiming race at five furlongs.

Out-of-town riders get most of Mile mounts

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The locals outnumber the invaders heading into Sunday's $1 million Atto Mile, with the list of 11 candidates including four from the United States.

The ledger differs on the riding front, however, with six of the 10 named jockeys scheduled to fly in for the Grade 1 turf race for 3-year-olds and upward.

The connections of two Woodbine-based hopefuls have engaged out-of-town riders, with Jose Santos picking up the mount on Perfect Soul and Gary Stevens on Numerous Times.

Spring Star goes wire-to-wire

DEL MAR, Calif. - Spring Star had not gone for the early lead in any of her previous four North American starts, but facing a paceless field in Sunday's Grade 2, $191,000 at Del Mar, she and jockey Alex Solis ended up in what proved to be the right spot.

Solis took Spring Star to the front, coaxed her through moderate fractions, then had enough left to hold off Magic Mission and survive an inquiry to take the Grade 2 grass race for older fillies and mares.
