Jerome: Extended stay pays off

After During won the $150,000 at Belmont Park, trainer Bob Baffert had to be happy he hadn't sent the 3-year-old colt home to California as he had originally planned five days earlier.

During, under Jose Santos, won the Jerome by three-quarters of a length over Tafaseel. Pretty Wild, the 6-5 favorite, finished third, 4 3/4 lengths behind Tafaseel. Inamorato, Your Bluffing, Roses in May, Distinct Vision, Gigawatt, and Region of Merit completed the order of finish.

Class Above's name fits; BC next

FLORENCE, Ky. - Satish Sanan already has won each of the Breeders' Cup races for 2-year-olds, having won the Juvenile Fillies with Cash Run in 1999 and the Juvenile last year with Vindication.

But after Class Above, ridden by Edgar Prado, posted a spectacular 16-length victory Saturday in the $100,000 Kentucky Cup Juvenile Fillies at Turfway Park, Sanan couldn't help but think that he might have just watched the best 2-year-old he has ever owned.

Demeteor avoids sprint stars

MIAMI - Demeteor was so impressive winning his first two career starts, owner-trainer Ken Hoffman wasted little time stepping the speedy gelding up against graded stakes competition, pitting him against the likes of Shake You Down and Private Horde in the Smile Sprint Handicap.

Demeteor ultimately proved no match for two of the top ranked sprinters in the country, finishing a well beaten 12th in the Grade 3 Smile.

Switcheroo chased the winner all the way and was clearly second best, finishing some 6 1/2 lengths in front of Above All Others.

Miss Crissy takes La Prevoyante

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Favored Miss Crissy found room in the stretch and went on to capture the $137,125 La Prevoyante Stakes at Woodbine on Saturday by 1 1/2 lengths.

Miss Crissy saved ground on the turn, stalking front-running Cricket Wicket in the one-mile turf race. She was angled into the two path for the stretch run by jockey Steven Bahen, hit the front at the three-sixteenths pole, and held off a bid from Kabul. My Sweet Tooch finished third in the 10-horse field of Ontario-sired 3-year-old fillies. The final time was 1:36.28.
