Fairplex: A first for Fogelsonger

POMONA, Calif. - Don'tsellmeshort ($4.20) gave jockey Ryan Fogelsonger his first California hundred-grander, winning the $122,898 Barretts Juvenile by 1 1/4 lengths over Fountain Grove.

Front-runner I'm Awesome Again finished third. Three others - Presumption, Devoted Lover, and Rush Into Heaven - were eliminated when Presumption blew the first turn and carried out both rivals.

Don'tsellmeshort is owned by Cecil Peacock and trained by Dan Hendricks. A California-bred son of Benchmark, Don'tsellmeshort has now won 3 of 6 starts.

Fairplex: Dixie High in time

POMONA, Calif. - Dixie High ($3.60) overcame a tough trip to win the $110,300 Barretts Debutante for 2-year-old fillies Saturday at Fairplex Park and give trainer Adam Kitchingman, 29, his first stakes win. Joe Steiner rode Dixie High, who was blocked through the far turn, found room in the lane, and won by 1 1/4 lengths over Blowing Bartok. A Kentucky-bred daughter of Anet, Dixie High will be considered for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Filllies.

Warleigh wins Louisiana Downs Handicap

Bossier City, La. - Warleigh, claimed by owner-trainer Steve Asmussen for $100,000 in his most recent start at Saratoga, paid immediate dividends on Sunday by winning the $100,000 Louisiana Downs Handicap. One Eyed Joker finished a distant second followed by Chauffe Au Rouge. Pay the Preacher was a late scratch.

Stroll makes case for trip to Cup

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Bill Mott has run at least one horse in each of the last 17 runnings of the Breeders' Cup. If he were to keep that streak alive, his representative this year would most likely be Stroll in the Mile.

Stroll registered his fourth consecutive victory on Sunday, slipping through an opening along the rail in upper stretch and drawing clear for a two-length victory in the Grade 2, $200,000 for 3-year-olds at Belmont Park. Kicken Kris, the Grade 1 Secretariat winner, held off Joe Bear, the Secretariat runner-up, for second by a nose.

Riders survive Bay Meadows spill

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Jockey Omar Figueroa was taken to Peninsula Hospital for X-rays on his left shoulder and wrist, while jockey Joe Castro apparently was uninjured after a horrific spill in Sunday's seventh race at Bay Meadows.

Figueroa's mount Always the Winner suffered a compound fracture of the left front leg at the quarter pole of a 1 1/16-mile race for $16,000 claimers.

Maiden wins Half Moon Bay Handicap

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Blue Blood Boot ($10.60), a maiden making only his third start, overpowered his rivals in the lane to win the $68,550 Half Moon Bay Handicap at Bay Meadows on Sunday.

Blue Blood Boot relaxed nicely behind Obermeister and Standard Setter, who engaged in a pace duel before Standard Setter took a bad step near the half-mile pole and was eased.

Winter Whiskey pulls upset in Swynford

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Winter Whiskey mowed down the fading speed under Jono Jones to post a big upset in Sunday's $134,250 Swynford Stakes at Woodbine

Winter Whiskey raced far off the dueling favorites, Estevan and San Diego Blowout, in the seven-furlong dash for 2-year-olds. He loomed into contention while four wide midway on the turn, and overhauled Estevan nearing the eighth pole before drawing off to prevail by three and a quarter lengths.

Ihla Grande scores upset in Hillsborough

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Ihla Grande ($45) unleashed a strong late kick, catching favored Lindsay Jean near the wire as she won the $60,950 Hillsborough Handicap by a head at Bay Meadows on Sunday.

"I did what the boss said," winning jockey Francisco Duran said of a morning phone call with trainer Paulo Lobo. "He said to save as much ground as I could."

Lindsay Jean looked as if she would win her second straight stakes over the Longden Turf Course as she sat in fourth behind a quick, contested pace involving Marty's Zee, A B Noodle and Pheiffer.

Perfect 'Ten' beats Soto

Louisiana Downs
Ten Most Wanted cruises past Soto on his way to a half-length victory in the Grade 2 Super Derby.

BOSSIER CITY, La. - Ten Most Wanted solidified his status as a Breeders' Cup Classic contender on Saturday when he edged past Soto under a hand ride for a half-length win the Grade 2, $500,000 on Saturday.

With the win, jockey Pat Day swept all three stakes on Saturday's card.
