Friends Lake received a perfect trip under Richard Migliore and rolled to a 3 1/2-length victory over Pa Pa Da in the $100,000 Sleepy Hollow for juvenile males. It was another 5 1/2 lengths back to Rb's Glitter.
Capeside Lady ($2.80) overcame a stumble at the start and a stubborn Schemer to win by a neck in the $100,000 Maid of the Mist for juvenile fillies. Clarksburg Queen finished third.
After recovering from her stumble, Capeside Lady made the lead turning for home. She was overtaken by Schemer in midstretch, but battled back along the rail and stuck her neck in front at the wire. Capeside Lady, owned by So Madcapt Stable and trained by Todd Pletcher, ran one mile in 1:41.37.
Jockey Chris DeCarlo had plenty of horse. He had French Charmer on a tight hold as the pair raced down the backstretch and around the far turn Saturday in the Flying Pidgeon Handicap at Calder. What he did not have was a place to run.
Trapped inside to the top of the stretch, DeCarlo found a spot for French Charmer as the pace-setting Drink a Toast drifted off the hedge turning for home. French Charmer burst through and drew away in the final furlong to win the $100,000 Flying Pidgeon by 1 1/4 lengths. Lost Appeal rallied late to edge Drink a Toast for second.
SAN MATEO, Calif. - Angel Gift ($3) repeated her 2002 victory with an easy five-length win in the $60,500 Golden Poppy Handicap.
Angel Gift, winless in five starts since scoring a three-length victory in the race last year, was fourth and four wide around the first turn. She took the lead down the backstretch and was never challenged. Rhiana, who sat behind her all the way, was second as the field of six paraded home in single-file order. The winning time was 1:42.78 for 1 1/16 miles.
Favored Political Attack and jockey Ramon Dominguez held off the late charge of 16-1 longshot Estio to win the $100,000 Sussex Handicap.
Political Attack ($4.20) stalked pacesetter Stanzaic to the far turn of the 1 1/16-mile race, run over yielding turf, and took the lead in the stretch. Estio rallied up the inside, but fell three-quarters of a length short. Stanzaic held third, three lengths farther back.
Owned by Erdenheim Farm and trained by Michael Matz, Political attack ran the distance in 1:44.98.
Gators N Bears did all the dirty work in the $50,000 Sonny Hine Stakes, and his reward was a victory in the six-furlong race for 3-year-olds. Under Rick Wilson, Gators N Bears pushed the early pace of Philadelphia Jim, put him away in midstretch, and had enough left to edge the late-running Super Fuse by three-quarters of a length.
Super Fuse bobbled at the start and rallied wide. He finished a head in front of First Blush.
Gators N Bears ($5.20) is owned and trained by Leo Nechamkin. He ran the six furlongs in 1:08.80.
ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Tusayan ($12.70) came charging down the center of the course in the stretch to capture the $144,750 Bunty Lawless Stakes for Ontario-sired runners.
Jockey Emile Ramsammy had Tusayan near the back of the pack during the first six furlongs of the one-mile turf race. All Star Lover dueled with Starbeau, Mister Coop, and Don't Seven Out through fractions of 23.47 and 47.23 over a course labeled as good, and All Star Lover emerged with the lead in midstretch.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Dancal already owned an impressive international portfolio before she arrived at The Meadowlands for Friday's Grade 3, $150,000 Violet Handicap.
The 5-year-old, bred in Ireland, had won races in South Africa and Dubai over the last two seasons, and on Friday she scored a front-running victory for her first North American graded stakes victory.
Dancal moved into Todd Pletcher's barn over the summer and has settled right into the program with two wins in three starts.
VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Three-time stakes winner Lord Samarai heads a full field of 2-year-olds in the $100,000 Ascot Graduation at Hastings on Sunday. The 1 1/16-mile Ascot is the lone middle-distance race open to all 2-year-olds at Hastings and is the final major stakes race at the meet, which closes Nov. 30.
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Snow Dance has had a terrific career in middle-distance turf races, winning several graded stakes and $938,597. But with no more than two races left in her career, trainer John T. Ward Jr. will try something different by running her Sunday in the $150,000 Rood and Riddle Dowager Stakes, a 1 1/2-mile turf race at Keeneland.
"Three turns," said Ward. "I think she'll probably run real well. There just weren't a whole lot of opportunities left for her. She's shown her ability to go long and kind of relax now."
