Sunland: Quarter Horses

SUNLAND PARK, N.M. - Chick Goes Steppin used a late burst to score an upset in the $125,000-added Jess Burner Memorial Stakes for New Mexico-breds. Trainer Michael Joiner and jockey G. R. Carter dominate the Quarter Horse standings here, so it was surprising that their horse was let go at 15-1 in a big race.

Negor De Az had the lead to the final yards before Chick Goes Steppin overtook him in the final yards. It was the first win from five starts this season for Chicks Goes Steppin, but the eighth in 21 career outs. Chick Goes Steppin covered the 400 yards in 19.489.

'Skippie' not a surprise to Leggio

Lou Hodges Jr.
G.W.'s Skippie, Frank Lovato Jr. up, pulls the upset in the $60,000 Tenacious Handicap Saturday at Fair Grounds.

NEW ORLEANS - The whole notion of a longshot needs revising when it comes to Andy Leggio at Fair Grounds. Long prices on Leggio-trained stakes horses have little bearing on their chance of winning.

In March, Leggio won the Explosive Bid Handicap with Candid Glen, who paid $170.20. And Saturday G.W.'s Skippie won the $60,000 Tenacious Handicap by 1 1/4 lengths over Spanish Empire, paying $92.60. Leggio's main owner, Glen Warren, owns both horses.
