She's talented but unpredictable

A year and a half ago, Adopted Daughter won her career debut at Keeneland, running 4 1/2 furlongs in 52 seconds and smashing a field of precocious 2-year-olds. It's more than slightly plausible that this filly will breathe a sigh of relief when she returns to a dirt sprint in Monday's featured ninth race at Fair Grounds.

No stealing this one

Fairly Ransom, here winning the Del Mar Derby, has a rematch with barnmate Sweet Return in the San Marcos.

ARCADIA, Calif. - The stunt that Julie Krone pulled off aboard in the Hollywood Derby will not work when Gary Stevens rides the colt in Monday's $150,000 San Marcos Stakes at Santa Anita.

After setting a pedestrian pace in the Hollywood Derby on Nov. 30 - dawdling fractions of 51.04 and 1:17.49 - Sweet Return pulled a 16-1 upset under Krone, edging stablemate Fairly Ransom.

In the San Marcos, over 1 1/4 miles on turf, Sweet Return's rivals are not expected to let Stevens get away with an uncontested lead.

Silent Sighs Millions-bound

ARCADIA, Calif. - Silent Sighs will be withdrawn from Monday's $150,000 Santa Ynez Stakes and sent to Gulfstream Park for the $250,000 Sunshine Millions Oaks on Saturday, trainer Julio Canani said.

Canani and owner Marty Wygod had debated on which race to try in recent days, but decided late Saturday morning to ship Silent Sighs to Gulfstream. She was entered for the Santa Ynez on Friday.

"This gives me five more days, even if she has to fly there," Canani said. "I think the race there will be easier than here."

St Averil wins Santa Catalina

St Averil (left) wins the Grade 2, $150,000 Santa Catalina Stakes at Santa Anita on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. - St Averil proved raw talent can overcome lack of experience in Saturday's Grade 2, $150,000 at Santa Anita. In only the third start of his career, St Averil raced wide the entire way in the 1 1/16-mile race, yet still roared past the leaders for a stylish 1 1/2-length victory.

Lucky Pulpit, who forced a hot pace with Perfect Moon, finished second, two lengths in front of third-place Master David, who was making his first start since finishing second in Aqueduct's Remsen Stakes on Nov. 29.

Second of June strikes again

Second of June, under Cornelio Velasquez, finishes strongly to win the Holy Bull Stakes by 2 3/4 lengths.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Second of June had just dominated a strong field of 3-year-olds, including Grade 1 winner Silver Wagon, in Saturday's $100,000 at Gulfstream Park. But trainer Bill Cesare took the victory in stride while putting the performance in proper prospective.

"It's just one race," said Cesare, who trains Second of June for his mother, Barbara Cesare. "It doesn't mean anything other than we just got $60,000. There are still a lot more races to come and a lot more good horses out there to run against.

'Gal' has much in her favor

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - She tried, but she couldn't do it. Gal O Gal attempted to win a Gulfstream Park turf stakes for the second straight year when she made her latest start in the Honey Fox Handicap on opening day, but she raced wide throughout after starting from the far outside post in a full field, and her usual late run was rendered ineffective.

A third good Hollendorfer filly

ALBANY, Calif. - Heavenly Humor showed the depth of leading trainer Jerry Hollendorfer's 3-year-old filly band as she scored a five-length victory over Smoke Break in the $60,000 Miss California Stakes on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields.

Heavenly Humor broke well and got over quickly to save ground behind a brisk early pace. She appeared to be in tight nearing the quarter pole but took advantage of an opening entering the stretch to split Smoke Break and pacesetting Little Foxy Baby. She then pulled away down the stretch.

Fair Grounds: Arcus alone on lead

A pace duel flattened Arcus in his last start. In the $75,000 Crescent City Derby at Fair Grounds, Arcus ($28.80) had things his way on the lead, and the more jockey Shane Laviolette asked, the more Arcus gave.

Walk This Way, the favorite, and Old Lee both made runs in the stretch, but Arcus had enough resolve to hold on for a 1 1/2-length win, covering 1 1/16 miles in 1:48.04.

Laurel: Bronze Abe re-rallies

Bronze Abe battles head-to-head almost to the finish line to win the $75,000 What A Summer Stakes at Laurel Park.

Jockey Erick Rodriguez came into the program at Laurel Park mired in a 1-for-44 slump to begin 2004. Rodriguez's bad luck looked as if it might continue when Bronze Abe won a pace duel with Bamba in the featured What a Summer Stakes only to give up the lead at top of the stretch.

Neither Rodriguez nor his mount gave up, however. Bronze Abe ($5.80) re-rallied and surged past Bamba in the final furlong to get up by a half-length in the $73,500 stakes for filly and mare sprinters. She covered six furlongs in 1:10.53.
