'Happiness' may be an overlay

ARCADIA, Calif. - Two basic handicapping considerations - class and condition - suggest that King of Happiness is nearly a standout Thursday in the feature race at Santa Anita. And yet, this import from England could be an overlay because of incidental factors that are far less important.

Surprized takes drop, gets setup

ALBANY, Calif. - Palmeiro and Surprized will each take a class drop when they head a contentious field of six older runners in Thursday's feature at Golden Gate Fields, a $32,000 claimer at 1 1/16 miles.

Surprized, a 5-year-old gelding who had to have his name changed at age 2 after winning a stakes, has not won since his 2-year-old year, but he has more than paid his way, earning $215,245. He had 3 seconds and 4 thirds in 13 starts against better company last year and finished the year with three straight third-place finishes.

Second of June on his toes

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - By all rights, Second of June is supposed to regress after having posted a career-best 108 Beyer Speed Figure when he won the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes here. But after working a mile in 1:42.60 over a somewhat dull Calder racing surface Tuesday morning, Second of June, the early favorite for the $250,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes on Feb. 14, gave little indication he might be tailing off.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - The distance will be a little longer, the price tags a bit higher, and the venue may have changed, but the competition will be the same when I'm All Yours, Last Stand, and Marco's Word renew acquaintances in Thursday's $40,000 optional claiming feature at Gulfstream Park. The race will be decided at a mile on the turf.
