Amid horde of newcomers, old school rules

Although there are 32 new stables at Oaklawn this meet, a good chunk of the races are being won by stables that have been at the track the longest. Led by 50-year veteran Bob Holthus, who sits atop the standings for the third straight week, trainers Terry Brennan, Terry Dunlavy, and Gary Hartlage are off to quick starts at Oaklawn.

Brennan has won with 4 of 11 starters and had a double last Wednesday. Dunlavy has gone 3 for 5 with his 11-horse stable, while Hartlage won with four of his first nine starters and has some live horses in Thursday.

Madeira Mist wins at Tampa

Boxed in traffic for six furlongs, Madeira Mist swung outside leaving the turn, gained a short lead in midstretch, then withstood a claim of foul for a three-quarter-length victory in the $100,000 Endeavour Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on Tuesday.

Under Edgar Prado, Madeira Mist was content to remain covered up from the backstretch to the quarter pole. Once Prado swung her to the outside, Madeira Mist drove past New Economy, then came out to bump Something Ventured, who was closing on the outside.

Lage keeps Miss New York sharp

ALBANY, Calif. - Trainer Armando Lage breathed a sigh of relief Sunday, when a $50,000 optional claiming sprint filled for Thursday's Golden Gate Fields card.

Although he had nominated Miss New York to this Saturday's $55,000-added Richmond Handicap, he wanted to run her in the six-furlong allowance, where she looks like the one to beat.

"I always try to find the easiest possible spot for my horses," Lage said. "I like to run them, and run them where they belong. My choice was always to run Thursday.

Bettors yet to believe Shiloh Bound is for real

NEW ORLEANS - The more Sunday's Risen Star Stakes comes into focus, the better a horse like Shiloh Bound starts to look.

Barring a last-minute surprise, the Grade 3, $150,000 Risen Star will lack stars. Tapit could have been the race's main attraction, but a sore shin derailed his trip to New Orleans, and at this point only one horse, a California-based maiden named Oneverycoolcat, is expected to ship from either coast.

Allspice shaky off 10-month layoff

NEW ORLEANS - Allspice, a 16-length maiden winner and the fifth-place finisher in the Grade 1 Ashland last spring, makes her first start of the year in Thursday's featured ninth race at Fair Grounds.

And as far as her trainer Greg Geier is concerned, it's about time.

Geier has entered several times, short and long, turf and dirt, and finally he has found a race for her. Her spot is a 5 1/2-furlong, second-level turf allowance, but with rain forecast here Tuesday through Friday, the race is likely to be moved from turf to dirt.

After Silver Wagon's work, race is on

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Silver Wagon, whose status for Saturday's Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes has been up in the air since he suffered a stone bruise 10 days ago, put himself back into the picture after working a mile in 1:41.97 seconds at Calder on Monday.

Zawzooth lands in soft spot

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Go ahead and just try to say the name Zawzooth five times, real fast. It's impossible. So too was the task Zawzooth faced in her last two starts in New York, when she ran into the outstanding female sprinter Randaroo in the First Flight and Top Flight handicaps.

failed to win each time, but that's nothing to be embarrassed about, considering that Zawzooth's more accomplished stablemate, Harmony Lodge, could not deal with Randaroo herself last Sunday at Gulfstream Park in the Shirley Jones Handicap.

Top milers back from layoffs

ARCADIA, Calif. - Fresh from layoffs, embark on their 2004 campaigns in Wednesday's $70,000 Thunder Road Handicap at Santa Anita.

A strong performance could lead them to the $350,000 Frank Kilroe Mile on March 6, the top turf race for milers at this meeting.

Both were in outstanding form last fall. Devious Boy won the Oak Tree Derby on turf on Oct. 4, a day before Designed for Luck won the Grade 2 Oak Tree Breeders' Cup Mile. But both were also beaten in their last starts.

Krone 'way ready' for return

ARCADIA, Calif. - Hall of Fame jockey Julie Krone, who has been out two months with an injury, returns with three mounts on Wednesday's eight-race program at Santa Anita.

Krone last rode at Hollywood Park on Dec. 12, when she suffered an upper chest injury in a two-horse spill. She resumed exercising horses last week and has worked several horses daily since the weekend.

"That was enough time," she said. "I'm way ready."

Nicks must get by his dad

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Ralph Nicks, a longtime assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, can win his first race as a trainer Wednesday, when Added Edge runs at Oaklawn Park. But one horse who will be a threat in the race is Bright Sea, who is trained by Nicks's father, Morris.

Added Edge and Bright Sea will meet in the eighth, a one-mile money allowance for older horses. The field of eight includes U S S Tinosa, who makes his first start for trainer Cole Norman, and Big Numbers, who makes his first start since August for trainer Steve Asmussen.
