PORTLAND, Ore. - A full field of 12 3-year-olds will do battle in Saturday's $10,000 Preview Stakes at 1 1/16 miles, the last major prep for the $20,000 Oregon Derby on April 3.

Lack of pace won't bother Skipaslew

ALBANY, Calif. - Now, it gets serious.

Ten 3-year-olds with varying degrees of Kentucky Derby aspirations meet Saturday in the Grade 3, $200,000 El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields. Some of the entrants will need a top performance to earn further Derby consideration.

Perhaps the marquee name in the field is Skipaslew, who has already won the Gold Rush Stakes and Grade 3 Golden Gate Derby. But Skipaslew, who was claimed for $50,000 last July by trainer Doug O'Neill for Merv Griffin, is far from a sure thing and may not even be favored.

O.K. Mikie all set for El Camino

ALBANY, Calif. - Trainer Jerry McArthur admitted to being nervous before O.K. Mikie ran second in the Grade 3 Golden Gate Derby, but, he said, "I'm okay," heading into Saturday's Grade 3, $200,000 El Camino Real Derby.

The Golden Gate Derby was the first $100,000 race of McArthur's career. O.K. Mikie, who is owned by Charles Lo, came out of that race to win the $75,000 Golden State Mile.

"Charles is on pins and needles, but I've done my job and now we'll let Mikie run his race," McArthur said.

General George rivals go again in the Toboggan

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Trainer Richard Dutrow Jr.'s stable dominated Aqueduct's inner-track meet, but one of Dutrow's top horses, Well Fancied, was conspicuous by his absence. With the opening of the main track earlier in the week, Well Fancied resurfaces in Saturday's $100,000-added Toboggan Handicap.

Taiaslew ready to challenge Gold Cup vets

PHOENIX - You would think that if you were one of the first two runners across the wire of the 2003 Phoenix Gold Cup, you would deserve marquee status in Saturday's edition of the race. Yet although Giovannetti and R. Baggio are well regarded in the field of nine, it's Taiaslew who takes center stage in Turf Paradise's signature event.

Gill pair's Beyers highest in Johnson

Only two of the eight horses entered in Saturday's Harrison E. Johnson Memorial Handicap at Laurel Park earned a triple-digit Beyer Speed Figure in their most recent start. And they both belong to Mike Gill.

Gill's entry of Last Intention and My Request appears formidable in the 1 1/8-mile race for 4-year-olds and up.

There Goes Rocket jumps to Delta

There Goes Rocket, who had been pointing for the $200,000 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park on March 20, will bypass that race in favor of the $50,000 Sportsman's Paradise at Delta Downs on Saturday night. A winner of $244,500, There Goes Rocket has earned the bulk of that money in restricted stakes, and his connections are concerned he might not be able to draw into the Rebel.

Sam Houston: Josie G. looks strong

Josie G. takes a dramatic class drop Saturday night when she goes from the Grade 2, $150,000 Silverbulletday into the $30,000 Sam Houston Oaks. The one-mile race for 3-year-old fillies drew 10.

Josie G. was bet down to 3-1 last out in the Silverbulletday at Fair Grounds and finished fourth to Shadow Cast. Prior to that race, Josie G. was second, beaten three-quarters of a length by Lotta Kim, in the $100,000 Tiffany Lass, also in New Orleans.

Eddie Martin Jr. will be in to ride Josie G. for Greg England and trainer Bret Calhoun.
