Kagele's making Midwest push

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - The California-based Kagele Brothers have made some shrewd moves in recent times. They got in on a 2-year-old named Southern Image at an auction two years ago, and last year, they decided to send $100,000 claim Pie N Burger to the Midwest to trainer Cole Norman.

The decisions are paying dividends. Southern Image won the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap last Saturday, and Pie N Burger will be favored to win his fifth stakes for Norman when he runs in Sunday's Grade 3, $100,000 Razorback Handicap at Oaklawn Park.

Record denied as timer fails

Private Horde, making his first start since a ninth-place finish in the Oct. 25 Breeders' Cup Sprint, appeared to set a track record Wednesday night at Turfway Park, but the mark will not be recognized because of a timer malfunction, according to Bob Elliston, the track's president.

After racing to a comfortable two-length win as the 1-2 favorite in a $40,000 allowance, Private Horde momentarily had the track record for 6 1/2 furlongs by finishing in 1:13.95 over a racing strip that yielded fast times throughout the program.

Epicentre will be closing fast

ALBANY, Calif. - Turf racing at Golden Gate Fields usually means big fields and tight finishes, and Sunday's $125,000 Grade 3 Golden Gate Breeders' Cup Handicap should fit the model.

Nine will run the 1 1/8 miles on the Lakeside Turf Course in this meet's premier race for older horses.

While it is a solid field, only the Wally Dollase-trained Mananan McLir has a graded stakes victory in the U.S., the Grade 2 American Derby at Arlington in 2002.

Tronare, trained by Kristin Mulhall, was a Group 2 winner in his native Chile, but is looking for his first U.S. victory.

Mulhall back for more with Tronare

ALBANY, Calif. - Will lightning strike twice for Kristin Mulhall?

Last fall, she sent the Chilean-bred Mister Acpen to Bay Meadows, where he won the Grade 3 Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Handicap for his first U.S. stakes victory.

On Sunday, she sends the Chilean-bred Tronare to Golden Gate Fields to run in the Grade 3, $125,000 Golden Gate Breeders' Cup Handicap in search of his first U.S. win.

Roberto Gonzalez, who rode Mister Acpen to victory, will ride Tronare.

"He's been running well, and this looks like it could be the right spot for him," Mulhall said.
