Fonner trainer, vet, banned

The leading trainer at Fonner Park, David Anderson, and a veterinarian, Pat Duncan, have been suspended for the remainder of the track's meet and fined $1,000 each for the administration of a so-called milkshake to a horse on race day. Anderson's assistant trainer, Chuck Wiley, was fined $500 for assisting in the treatment.

Umpateedle a winner at Pimlico

Racing at her fourth different track since Jan. 30, the Mark Shuman-trained Umpateedle sprung a mild upset in Saturday's $50,000 Primonetta for fillies and mares at Pimlico.

Umpateedle, the fourth choice in the betting, led by a half-length early under leading rider Ramon Dominguez, then was stuck on the rail inside Balmy as the two ding-donged head to head for the lead around the turn.

Balmy inched ahead in early stretch but Dominguez roused Umpateedle with the whip and she surged past Balmy about 20 yards from the wire and won going away by 1 1/4 lengths.

Pletcher two sure can do in Lafayette

Wulpe, with John Velazquez up, starts in the $100,000 Lafayette Stakes at Keeneland on Sunday.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Todd Pletcher has so many good horses in his care that it would be understandable if he sometimes lost track of things. But that's part of what has attracted so many deep-pocketed clients to his far-flung racing operation. Ask Pletcher about any of his horses, and he usually nails every detail.

Pletcher was on the move Friday at Keeneland, where he said he said he will "be in and out quite a bit" as the spring meet unfolds.

"I'm working some horses Sunday in Florida, then I'm going to New York, but I'll be back," he said.

Timo the Transylvania victor on opening day

LEXINGTON, Ky. - It was a gray day as Keeneland opened its 15-day spring meet Friday, and not just because of the weather.

Timo, a distinctive-looking gray colt, rallied under Edgar Prado to capture the featured $113,400 Transylvania Stakes on a raw, overcast, sometimes wet afternoon. An El Prado colt bred and owned by Carolyn Kapioltas and trained by Bill Badgett, Timo returned $6.60 as second choice in a field of nine 3-year-olds.

Frankel filly out to prove last not true

ARCADIA, Calif. - Etoile Montante has a reputation to restore Sunday at Santa Anita, where the 4-year-old filly makes her first start since finishing nowhere as the 2-1 favorite in the Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes four months ago at Hollywood Park.

Ten fillies and mares entered the Grade 3 Las Cienegas Handicap, a 6 1/2-furlong turf sprint in which Etoile Montante is expected to be favored over Dedication, Little Treasure, Polygreen, Fudge Fatale, Stormica, Any for Love, Notting Hill, Petite Histoire, and How Funny.

Pesci aims at lesser target

ARCADIA, Calif. - More than two months after Pesci suffered her first defeat, in the $500,000 Sunshine Millions Distaff at Gulfstream Park, the filly named for and co-owned by the famous actor Joe Pesci will attempt to win her first stakes in Sunday's $75,000 Santa Lucia Handicap at Santa Anita.

A couple of months ago, trainer and co-owner Wesley Ward did not expect Pesci to be eligible for the Santa Lucia, which is run over 1 1/16 miles for fillies and mares that have not won a stakes at a mile or longer this year.

Ignore the old boys at own peril

CALGARY, Alberta - Burlington House and Mr Superior Knight, a pair of invaders from Manitoba, are the elder statesmen in a field of nine chasing a $9,500 purse in Sunday's seventh race, but don't let their age fool you.

Both runners have seen better days, as the $7,500 claiming tags will attest, but their back-class is hard to ignore in this field.

With 36 victories between them the two have accounted for more wins than their seven rivals combined, and either runner is capable of going wire to wire.

Baze in unusual spot - not on top

ALBANY, Calif. - When the Golden Gate Fields meet concludes on Sunday, it will be the end of an era.

For the first time since 1980, Russell Baze will not be the leading jockey at a major northern California meet at which he has participated. Baze, currently fourth in the standings, has won 55 straight riding titles, 25 at Golden Gate Fields and 30 at Bay Meadows. The streak does not count a three-year period from 1988-1991 when Baze rode in Southern California.

'Good News' may travel fast

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Trainer Steve Hobby has overhauled his feeding program for Sue's Good News, and he is hopeful she will bounce back strongly from a recent defeat when she takes on six other fillies and mares Sunday in the $75,000 Bayakoa Stakes at Oaklawn Park.

"If the real Sue shows up, she'll be hard to beat," said Hobby, who trains Sue's Good News for Cresran LLC.
