Willis to run eight in Lazy E races

Trainer Eddie Willis will be busy on Saturday at Remington Park with six qualifiers to the Grade 2, $151,000 Lazy E Futurity and two horses in the Grade 2, $99,000 Lazy E Derby, two races restricted to the offspring of stallions standing at nearby Lazy E Ranch.

Pacing Willis's six-pack in the futurity is second-fastest qualifier Mitey Cash Obsession, winner of the third of six trials on March 20 by 2 3/4 lengths in 17.761 seconds for 350 yards. The other Willis qualifiers are SR Spanky, Ima Easy Dashin, La Corona Classic, Shake Cartel, and Hesa Special Corona.

Penn National track report

A Spring Handicappers' Challenge, with total cash prizes estimated at $10,000 to go to the top 10 finishers, will be held on May 8 at Penn National Race Course.

Contestants will pay a $100 entry fee, plus put up an additional $100 betting stake, and will be required to make a minimum $10 wager on at least eight of Penn National's 10 live Thoroughbred races.

Delta Downs track report

Delta Downs has a lot of momentum going into the opening of its 57-night Quarter Horse meet on Friday. The track closed out one of the most successful Thoroughbred meets in its 30-year history last month, and will offer a record 34 stakes races worth more than $1.2 million for Quarter Horses this meet, which runs through Aug. 15.

Delta will run Friday through Sunday, with first post on Friday and Saturday at 6:45 p.m. Central and at 3 p.m. on Sundays.

Fonner Park track report

Grand Island, Neb. - The memory of Ak-Sar-Ben still burns brightly in the minds and hearts of many racing fans across the country. Friday's fifth race sponsor is one such group, and will present a blanket emblazoned with "Friends of Ak-Sar-Ben, San Diego, CA" to the winning connections.

Rod Wentworth of San Diego is making the drive back to Nebraska to sponsor the race, and reunite with old friends from their days as regulars at Nebraska's former showcase track, which closed in 1995.

Evangeline Downs track report

CARENCRO, La. - A surprisingly quick racing surface at Evangeline Downs helped produce fast times in the opening week of the meet.

Kreems View equaled the track record of 1:31.40 for 7 1/2 furlongs on Friday night. A 5-year-old mare who is owned and trained by Doris Hebert, Kreems View was racing for a $12,500 claiming price and was ridden by Steve Bourque.

Better Talk Now must overcome layoff

Better Talk Now, who won the Grade 2 Knickerbocker at Aqueduct in November, drew post 11 for Saturday night's $200,000 Connally Breeders' Cup Turf at Sam Houston Race Park. He is the 119-pound highweight for the 1 1/8-mile turf race for older horses that closes out the meet.

Better Talk Now, who has not run since the Knickerbocker, arrived at Sam Houston late Tuesday afternoon aboard a flight that also carried two others to town for the Connally: Quest Star, a Grade 2 winner last out at Gulfstream, and Del Mar Show, runner-up in the Knickerbocker.

Post 11 fine for Smarty

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - The undefeated Smarty Jones drew the outside post in a field of 11 for the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park, to be run Saturday. Entries for the Grade 2, 1 1/8-mile race were taken Wednesday.

Smarty Jones has won all five of his career starts, and with his win last out in the $200,000 Rebel Stakes became the lone 3-year-old eligible to win a $5 million bonus from Oaklawn. Smarty Jones will win the bonus if he goes on to capture the Arkansas Derby and the Kentucky Derby.

Lion Heart tops 9-horse Blue Grass field

Hollywood Futurity winner Lion Heart will headline a wide-open nine-horse field in Saturday's 80th running of the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. Post positions were drawn Wednesday for the 1 1/8 mile $750,000 race for 3-year-olds, with 5-2 morning-line favorite Lion Heart getting post No. 6. Mike Smith will have the mount.
