Sinkhole delays Suffolk training

A 10-foot sinkhole caused by heavy rains last week has delayed the opening of training on the Suffolk Downs main track until it can be repaired.

The hole opened near the half-mile pole when a drainage outlet flooded last Thursday, the day the track was scheduled to open for training after having been closed for the winter last December.

Suffolk officials are not sure how long repairs will take but are hoping to be ready for the meet's opening day, Saturday, May 1.

Erewhon can prove he's tops on turf

ARCADIA, Calif. - The promise that Erewhon has shown since switching to turf earlier this year could result in a win in Saturday's $100,000 La Puente Stakes at Santa Anita.

Otto has two favorites on Illinois Day

CHICAGO - Fourteen years ago, the sting of losing an expensive racing prospect to injury made owner Richard Otto change tactics. Instead of buying racehorses, Otto would breed his own.

This from-the-ground-up approach often produces more headaches than stakes winners. Not for Otto. Saturday, on Illinois Day at Hawthorne Race Course, he and trainer Tony Mitchell have prohibitive favorites for two of six $100,000 stakes races.

Sunland: Another Asmussen shipper

SUNLAND PARK, N.M. - Trainer Steve Asmussen will wrap up his first Sunland Park training title this weekend, and the achievement is as much a testament to his organizational skills as his horsemanship. With only 18 stalls on the grounds, Asmussen has continually shuttled horses in and out from Fair Grounds, Sam Houston, Oaklawn, and his training center in Laredo, Texas, always juggling condition books to find just the right spots.
