Warleigh wins Connally Breeders' Cup Turf

Warleigh, who won five consecutive turf races last year, picked up the richest win of his career Saturday night when he drove to a half-length win over Skate Away in the $220,000 at Sam Houston Race Park. The mile and an eighth race for older horses closed out the track's meet.

Warleigh ($13.40) took the lead after an opening quarter, increased his advantage in the stretch, then held off a late bid by Skate Away. It was another length back in third to Gentlemen JJ, while the favorite, Quest Star, finished fourth. Warleigh covered the distance over yielding turf in 1:53.01.

Pick six carryover reaches $578,231

ARCADIA, Calif. - There is a two-day pick-six carryover of $578,231 at Santa Anita on Sunday after the longshots Toasted ($53.20) and Cinematic ($83) scored surprise wins on Saturday.

The carryover is the second highest of the Santa Anita meeting.

Sunday's pick six covers the fourth through nine races.

The fourth race features a field of nine state-bred maiden claimers over 1 1-16 miles. Enduring Grace, the mount of Javier Santiago, is the 2-1 morning-line favorite, a slight choice over Drought Breaker.

A to the Z victorious in Sunland Park Handicap

SUNLAND PARK, N. M. - A sudden mid-afternoon desert thunderstorm left the always-dry Sunland surface a soupy quagmire and left the $100,000-added Sunland Park Handicap up for grabs. With the usually glib track turned into a tiring quicksand, Quyet Bui put in a perfectly timed ride aboard Susan Ray's A to the Z, coming 16 lengths back at the half, then rallying seven wide into the stretch to get up in the final strides.

Toasted takes La Puente

ARCADIA, Calif. - Toasted, once considered an outside candidate for the Kentucky Derby, scored an upset in Saturday's $110,500 La Puente Stakes on turf at Santa Anita.

The third longest shot in the field of nine 3-year-olds, Toasted ($53.20) rallied from last in the final half-mile, finishing 1 1-4 lengths in front of Erewhon.

Seattle Borders, who led in the final furlong, finished third, 1 3-4 lengths behind Toasted. Terroplane, the 2-1 favorite, finished fourth.

Hippogator captures Miss America

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Hippogator ($38.60) scored a wire-to-wire victory over stablemate Marwood in the $83,775 Miss America Handicap at Bay Meadows on Saturday.

The 4-year-old filly set comfortable fractions under jockey Roberto Gonzalez as she maintained the advantage early over A B Noodle throughout. She opened in the lane, and A B Noodle did not respond immediately.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Two hours before one lion got eaten up late, another got his prey. Whereas Lion Heart was passed in the final yards by The Cliff's Edge in the Blue Grass Stakes, Lion Tamer was able to notch his third straight victory when he rolled past a pair of dueling front-runners to capture the 18th running of the Grade 2, $250,250 on the Blue Grass undercard.

Smarty Jones goes to Derby unbeaten

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Smarty Jones will go into the Kentucky Derby with a perfect 6-for-6 record after turning in a dominating performance in the Grade 2, $1 million before a closing-day crowd of 62,264 at Oaklawn on Saturday.

Smarty Jones won the 1 1/8-mile race by 1 1/2 lengths over a late-running Borrego. It was another 1 1/2 lengths back to Pro Prado, who was third. Following the race, the connections of Borrego and Pro Prado both indicated their horses would advance to the Kentucky Derby.
