HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer Tim Hills may have the upper hand when he sends out the uncoupled pair of Desirable Moment and Melody of Colors against eight rivals in Saturday's $50,000 Bob Slater Stakes on the turf.

is the quicker of the Hills duo and brings a two-race win streak into the five-furlong Bob Slater. She was also credited with the about-five-furlong course record for her half-length victory against high-priced claiming rivals March 28. The record has come under question, however, in light of recent malfunctions by the track teletimer system.

Hollendorfer becomes 6th to reach 4,000 wins

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Jerry Hollendorfer became the sixth trainer in Thoroughbred racing history to win 4,000 races when Gonetorule scored a $17.80 upset in the sixth race at Bay Meadows on Thursday. Hollendorfer had won No. 3,999 one race earlier with Soccer Dan.

"I don't know if I'll reach 5,000, but I'll try," Hollendorfer said after being presented with a flat-screen television by Bay Meadows for his achievement.

Radke to have surgery after spill

Jockey Kevin Radke broke his left wrist and suffered a compound fracture of his nose when he fell after his mount, Reflected Lite, clipped heels with another horse on the first turn of a one-mile turf race at Bay Meadows on Wednesday.

Radke, who won the riding title at the recent Golden Gate Fields meeting, was taken to Stanford Hospital after the accident. Medical staff members there performed procedures to realign his nose and wrist.

Bedanken in habit of winning

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Rare is the horse who wins more than she loses, but that is the case with Bedanken, who is seeking her fourth straight win over 17 months Saturday in the $75,000 Irving Distaff at Lone Star Park.

A 7 1/2-furlong turf race for fillies and mares, the Irving Distaff also drew defending champ Cherylville Slew and Janeian, who set a course record when she won the $150,000 Indian Maid Breeders' Cup Handicap last year at Hawthorne Race Course.

Fonner Park track report

Grand Island, Neb. - Thundering Verzy returns to his home state and heads a field of eight 3-year-old Nebraska-bred colts and geldings in the $30,000-added Fonner Park Special Stakes.

Thundering Verzy won his maiden at first asking last year, then reeled off consecutive wins in the Club House Special and Columbus Futurity Stakes. He then ventured to Arizona's Turf Paradise, where he raced during the winter.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Hastings opens its 2004 live season Saturday under the new ownership of Canadian Gaming Corp. and Peter Wall, who paid Woodbine Entertainment Group $20.1 million to take over racing at Hastings, the only major track in British Columbia. PORTLAND, Ore. - Quiz the Maid will attempt to complete a sweep of the open stakes for 3-year-old fillies at this Portland meet when she takes on five challengers in Saturday's $10,000 Oregon Oaks at 1 1/16 miles.

Quiz the Maid, a Washington-bred daughter of Basket Weave from the barn of Jim Fergason, has already won the six-furlong Lassie Stakes, the six-furlong Ms Stakes, and the one-mile Mt. St. Helens Stakes. If she completes the sweep in the Oaks, Quiz the Maid will duplicate a feat that Back Street Gal accomplished last season en route to horse of the meeting honors.
