LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The conditions for Saturday's $400,000 changed dramatically when a torrential downpour turned the Churchill Downs grass course from firm to yielding just minutes before the race. But the soft ground proved no obstacle for Stroll, who got back on the winning track with an easy 2 1/2-length victory over Sweet Return in the Grade 1 turf fixture.

Medallist gets best of Forest Danger

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Another Saturday, another Aqueduct stakes win for Allen Jerkens, who for the third straight week saddled a hard-to-figure upset winner. This time it was Medallist, the least-accomplished of five 3-year-olds in the $147,000 Withers, who battled inside heavily favored Forest Danger through fast early fractions and pulled away despite drifting out past the middle of the track.

Synco Peach steps up

CHICAGO - April 19 was to have been a watershed day for Synco Peach, the day she would match racing skills with open company for the first time. But when a statebred allowance spot came up the next day, her trainer, Percy Scherbenske, did the only reasonable thing, plugging Synco Peach into the softer spot. And so, for the third time in five starts, Synco Peach easily handled opponents of the Illinois-bred variety.

Mobil upsets Chris's Bad Boy

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Mobil ($5.50) overhauled 1-2 favorite Chris's Bad Boy at the 70-yard pole before edging away to capture the Grade 3, $160,800 Vigil Handicap.

Chris's Bad Boy set fractions of 22.86 and 45.02 seconds in Saturday's seven-furlong race, while tracked by Anglian Prince.

Mobil stalked in third under Todd Kabel, and kicked in through the stretch to prevail by 1 3/4 lengths in a final time of 1:21.81. Awesome Action was another four lengths back in third in the five-horse field.

Calder: Stay Forever's home run

Calder turf-loving Stay Forever, last under Eddie Castro for the first half of the race, moved four wide on the turn and rallied to victory in the final strides of the $150,000 Hollywood Wildcat Breeders' Cup Handicap.

Mrs. M tracked the leaders along the hedge, slipped through inside to grab the lead leaving the eighth pole, but could not hold off the winner in the final yards, beaten by three-quarters of a length.

Delaware: 'Frisky' drops and scores

Frisky Spider, the 4-5 favorite, sat off the pace for a quarter-mile, moved onto the flank of pacesetter Snub the Devil at the half, then inched ahead in the stretch to win the $75,300 Francis "Jock" LaBelle Memorial by a neck.

Xtreamotion was another length back, a non-threatening third.

Frisky Spider, ridden by Eddie King Jr., covered the six furlongs in 1:11.16 and paid $3.60. Frisky Spider's last two races, his only losses in six lifetime starts, came in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth and the Grade 1 Florida Derby.

Tampa: Restage does the job

OLDSMAR, Fla. - Finding room along the rail in the drive, Restage responded to the strong handling of jockey Jesus Castanon to post a neck victory in the first running of the Chris Thomas Turf Classic Stakes.

Restage, a Repriced gelding trained by Tom Proctor, returned $5.60 as the favorite in the field of nine turf runners, and covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.03 while scoring his second straight stakes win at this track.

Coahoma finished second, a neck to the good of Milky Way Guy, who hit the wire a head in front of Guardianofthegate.

Pimlico: Mr. O'Brien pulls off upset

Mr. O'Brien, an 8-1 shot ridden patiently by Rick Wilson, stalked two front-running longshots for a half-mile, then snatched the lead and pulled away, winning the $50,000 Henry S. Clark Stakes by nine lengths.

Spruce Run, 4-1, rallied from fifth early to gain second, 2 1/2 lengths ahead of even-money favorite Tam's Terms, who finished third.

Mr. O'Brien ran the mile on firm turf in 1:35.80, paid $19 to win and teamed with Spruce Run for an $88.40 exacta.

"He relaxed behind the front two and at the top of the stretch he just took off by himself," Wilson said.

Mayo on the Side outduels Azeri

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Trainer Carl Nafzger completed a sweep of upsets in the filly and mare distaff division when his 5-year-old mare Mayo on the Side won a stretch-long duel with the champion Azeri to win Saturday's Grade 1, $280,250 by a head.

On Friday, Nafzger's Lead Story won the Grade 2 Louisville Breeders' Cup Handicap, knocking off the 2-5 favorite Sightseek.

"It ain't like winning the Derby," said Nafzger, who won the 1990 Derby with Unbridled. "But, it's close."

Speightstown wire to wire in Churchill 'Cap
