Another shot for Shake Em Fever to surprise

Shake Em Fever will try to prove that his trial win at 28-1 was not a fluke when he starts in the $160,800 Texas-Bred Futurity at Sam Houston Race Park on Saturday night. It is the second of six futurities to be contested during the Sam Houston season, which runs through Nov. 6.

Shake Em Fever was disregarded by bettors when he made his career debut in the first of eight trials April 23, which he won by 1 1/4 lengths in 15.811 seconds for the 300 yards. It was the fastest-qualifying time by the equivalent of about a half-length.

Second takeout bill passes

Legislation that would increase the takeout rate in California, with the extra money earmarked to supplement racetrack workers' compensation costs, was passed by the state Assembly on Monday by a unanimous vote. The bill has been sent to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for his signature.

Schwarzenegger vetoed a similar bill earlier this year, but since then, his administration has passed a statewide workers' compensation reform package. Horsemen's officials said Tuesday that they expected Schwarzenegger to support the new legislation.
