Gray has mare to beat

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Remiewaterbluz will be going for her 10th lifetime win, and her fifth in six starts at five or 5 1/2 furlongs, in Saturday's $16,000 sixth race. The five-furlong allowance race for fillies and mares has attracted five starters.

Trained by Clayton Gray, Remiewaterbluz has run three times this year, most recently finishing fifth in the one-mile Wintergreen Stakes at Turfway Park on March 21. Prior to that, the 5-year-old Remiewaterbluz won a starter allowance and a conditioned allowance race at Turfway.

Gygistar draws off in Westchester

ELMONT, N.Y. - When Gygistar finished a closing fourth in the Grade 1 Carter last month, trainer Mark Hennig made a game plan to stretch him out in the one-mile Westchester Handicap on opening day of Belmont Park's spring meet.

Hennig's decision paid off when Gygistar powered to a 4 1/4-length victory over Saarland in the $109,500 Westchester before a crowd of 6,368.

After winning the 1 1/16-mile Dwyer at Belmont in July 2002, Gygistar raced exclusively in sprints. His biggest win came when he was 3, in the Grade 1 King's Bishop at Saratoga in August 2002.

Funny Cide looks sharp for Pimlico Special

ELMONT, N.Y. - Funny Cide and Dynever, both of whom are being pointed to the Grade 1, $500,000 Pimlico Special on May 14, worked Wednesday at Belmont Park on the main track.

Funny Cide, last year's Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, worked a bullet six furlongs in 1:11.93, handily, over a fast track following the harrowing break. With exercise rider Robin Smullen aboard, Funny Cide's first quarter was timed in 24.30 seconds, followed by 35.60 for three furlongs and 47.30 for a half-mile. He galloped out seven furlongs 1:25.30.

Twilight programs begin

ELMONT, N.Y. - Local handicappers can sleep in on Friday with the start of twilight racing at Belmont Park. Every Friday at the spring meet, with the exception of June 4, post time for the opener will be 3 p.m. Eastern, two hours later than usual.

Three turf races were drawn on the nine-race card, but with an iffy forecast there is no certainty those races will remain on the grass.

Old Deuteronomy live on surface switch

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - One strategy for buying a European horse for American racing is to purchase a stakes runner with a dirt pedigree. Placed on a different surface, these horses sometimes improve, putting themselves in position to chase lucrative purses in main-track stakes.

Others long for the return to the grass. Old Deuteronomy is one such example.

'Wicked' tunes up for longer races

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Wild and Wicked, who won the Ohio Derby last June and later finished fourth in the Haskell Invitational and Travers Stakes, makes his California debut in a $54,000 optional claimer at Hollywood Park on Friday night.

Run over 7 1/2 furlongs on dirt, the race is Wild and Wicked's first start in more than eight months and first outing for trainer Doug O'Neill.

"We expect him to run on at the end," O'Neill said. "Hopefully, he'll be back, and it will be a strong start to running in longer races. He's fresh and ready to run."

Fergason's winning ways continue at new meeting

AUBURN, Wash. - Trainer Jim Fergason is on a roll.

Fergason wrapped up the recently concluded Portland Meadows meeting with a flourish, saddling three winners on the final Saturday card to equal, surpass, and extend the record of 48 wins set by brother Rolland Fergason in 1999. He was also prominent in stakes competition, sending out the meet's top 3-year-old filly, Quiz the Maid, to a trio of added-money wins.

Volatile Vickie seeks turnaround

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The aptly named Volatile Vickie has run to extremes in her two outings at the meeting, and will be tough if she brings her "A" game to Friday's Woodbine feature, a five-furlong allowance for fillies and mares.

Mr. J.T.L. gives dirt a try again

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Mr. J.T.L. may be as talented as any contestant in Saturday's $150,000 Queenston Stakes.

There is, however, one important qualifier to that statement - Mr. J.T.L. has shown a distinct preference for turf thus far in his career, and the Queenston is run over seven furlongs on the main track.

But the Queenston also happens to be a prep for the $1 million Queen's Plate, the 1 1/4-mile race for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds, which will be run on the dirt here June 27.

'Red' returns on short rest

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Two weeks after Continental Red finished second against California-breds in the Khaled Stakes, the veteran gelding returns in Saturday's $350,000 Jim Murray Memorial Handicap at Hollywood Park.

Even though the break is shorter than the typical gap between races for the modern Thoroughbred, trainer Ian Jory can find no reason to pass the Murray.

"It's really not that tough of a race," he said. "He's doing great and I don't have anything else for him."
