Fair Grounds case takes twist

Embattled Fair Grounds Race Course filed a lawsuit Friday seeking to annul a $90 million judgment rendered against the track in March. The basis of the suit is a 1992 letter Fair Grounds claims is exculpatory, but there is controversy over the relevance of the letter's content.

Ten Most Wanted out till fall

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Ten Most Wanted, the millionaire multiple stakes winner, is out of training with a strained ligament to his right foreleg, trainer Wally Dollase said.

Ten Most Wanted could return to racing in the fall, but there is also a chance that he will be retired for stud duty. Dollase said the partnership that owns Ten Most Wanted has received inquiries from a stud farm, but that no long-term decisions have been made.

Lopez saved by helmet after spill

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Jockey David Lopez, just released from Stanford Hospital after suffering a severe concussion in an April 29 spill, only wanted to do one thing Wednesday after an examination by Bay Meadows track physician Dr. David Seftel: see a tape of that race.

"I'm all right, but I don't remember too much about it," Lopez said. "I wanted to find a tape to see what happened."

Seftel said it's understandable Lopez can't remember the accident.

Second of June starts long road back

MIAMI - Trainer Bill Cesare couldn't help but wonder what might have been while watching Smarty Jones splash to victory in the Kentucky Derby.

After his Second of June had followed an easy victory in Gulfstream Park's Holy Bull Stakes with a game second-place finish to Read the Footnotes in the Fountain of Youth, Cesare had one of the hottest commodities in the 3-year-old division. But a few hours after the Fountain of Youth Cesare's Derby dreams were dashed when Second of June was diagnosed with a condylar fracture of his cannon bone.

A pal for Maysville Slew

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Maysville Slew fired one of his best races in months last out thanks in part to the friendship of a goat named Megan. Goats can be an appealing "pet" for horses, and Megan, who roams the shed rows in barn A3 at Lone Star Park, took a liking to Maysville Slew a few hours before he powered to a 4 3/4-length allowance win at Lone Star Park on April 25.

She will again be around on Sunday, when Maysville Slew takes on five others in a 1 1/16-mile allowance prep for the Grade 3, $300,000 Lone Star Park Handicap.

Daydreaming aims at Mother Goose

ELMONT, N.Y. - Following Daydreaming's facile win in a second-level allowance race on Thursday, trainer Shug McGaughey said the 3-year-old filly would be pointed to the Grade 1 Mother Goose at Belmont Park on June 26.

Daydreaming, a daughter of A.P. Indy, won the 1 1/16-mile race by nine lengths after displaying an incredible burst of acceleration in the stretch. She covered the distance in 1:42.74 over a fast track and earned a 97 Beyer Speed Figure.

Lasting Code's comeback cranks up

AUBURN, Wash. - When Lasting Code underwent surgery to remove ankle chips following her brilliant 3-year-old campaign in 2002, owner Jerre Paxton and trainer Bob McMeans could afford to give her all the time she needed, and then some. The two had Strikes No Spares to contest last year's older filly and mare stakes, with 3-year-old star Bisbee's Prospect waiting in the wings.

Strikes No Spares and Bisbee's Prospect are now retired, with the former being bred to Belong to Me and the latter to Touch Gold. It's time for Lasting Code to step up.

Jockey Hoverson right back where he started

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - After a 12-year absence from the Pacific Northwest, jockey Chad Hoverson has returned to ride at Hastings. Hoverson, 50, began his riding career in 1976 at Hastings, known then as Exhibition Park. He won his first race aboard a cheap claimer trained by Mike Drozdowski named Hard Choice.

Nashinda awaits two-turn Oaks prep

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The 1 1/8-mile Labatt Woodbine Oaks is the stated goal of Nashinda, the talented 3-year-old filly trained by Mac Benson.

Benson had planned to run Nashinda in Sunday's seven-furlong Fury Stakes as a prep to the June 13 Oaks, but she will skip the race and await the 1 1/16-mile Selene here May 23.

"I was really hoping to get three races into her before the Oaks," Benson said. "I should have gone to Keeneland, got a nice race into her there, and come back for the Fury."
