SAN MATEO, Calif. - The Bay Meadows Land Company, owner of Bay Meadows Racetrack, has taken a major step towards running its own race meet with the formation of the Bay Meadows Racing Association, which will operate the track beginning Jan. 1, 2005.

The Bay Meadows Land Company currently leases the track to Magna Entertainment Corporation, which holds two race meets per year at the facility and also owns nearby Golden Gate Fields. The creation of the new entity, however, signals that the company will not extend its lease with Magna when it expires on Dec. 31.

Canadian Frontier takes advantage

ELMONT, N.Y. - Canadian Frontier took advantage of an inside trip and a bad break by favored Shake You Down to win Saturday's Grade 3, $107,700 at Belmont Park.

Shake You Down's right front foot was buried in the dirt when the gates opened, causing him to stumble. He was further inhibited when Aggadan, breaking directly to his outside, broke inward, forcing Ramon Dominguez to take up. Shake You Down chased the field, but eventually finished last as the 4-5 favorite.

Spanky, 'Bayou' tough pair

STICKNEY, Ill. - For a reporter, trying to extract a straight answer from trainer Spanky Broussard is like pulling an elephant's tooth with a pair of pliers. But in the end, there is always something in there to grasp onto, beneath the false annoyance, the feigned bravado.

Broussard at heart is mostly mirth. He also has trained Thoroughbred racehorses long enough to have a fair idea which of them can run. Last season there was an unraced 2-year-old filly named Bold Bayou Baby.

Big new presence in Wayar barn

MIAMI - Trainer Manuel Wayar had only five horses on his stall application for the 2004 Calder meeting. He added a sixth member to the stable shortly before the session began. And what an addition it was.

Wayar has assumed the training duties for the multiple graded stakes winner , replacing Myra Mora, who shipped her stable to Finger Lakes at the conclusion of the Tampa Bay Downs meet. Tour of the Cat is owned by Sue Gannon's Double G Stable.

"A friend of mine who knew the owner recommended me, and I was given the horse after he returned from Dubai," Wayar said.
