Miss Preakness: 'Souvenirs' returns

Among My Souvenirs, unbeaten in three starts, rates a slight edge in a competitive renewal of the Grade 3, $100,000 Miss Preakness Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at six furlongs.

After winning her first three starts - including two stakes - Among My Souvenirs was scratched out of the Grade 3 Cicada at Aqueduct on March 20 the morning of the race because of a foot abscess. It took a while for the foot to heal, according to trainer Anthony Dutrow, but her last three works at Laurel Park indicate she is ready for the Miss Preakness.

The Very One: Rivals meet again

Nicole's Dream and Tangier Sound, who were separated by a nose two weeks ago in the Mamzelle Stakes at Churchill Downs, renew their rivalry Friday at Pimlico in the $75,000 The Very One Stakes, for female turf sprinters at five furlongs.

Tangier Sound was an unlucky loser of the Mamzelle, but she has a terrific chance to reverse that outcome. After carrying equal weights in the Mamzelle, Tangier Sound gets a five-pound (119-124) weight break from Nicole's Dream and figures to get a super trip if she can rate as comfortably as she did in her most-recent start.

When it ceases to become just a game

BALTIMORE - Man down.

Jockey Rick Wilson came off Advance to Go leaving the gate in last Saturday's second race at Pimlico, a $25,000 claimer at 1 1/16 miles on the dirt. Advance to Go kicked Wilson in the head and continued down the track. Wilson never moved. The race was declared no contest when the rest of the field had to be pulled up to avoid him lying on the track.

Jenda goes after a double

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Trainer Chuck Jenda could be looking at back-to-back stakes victories at Bay Meadows.

A B Noodle won last weekend's Grade 3 Yerba Buena Handicap for Jenda, and on Saturday the trainer sends out Lost Bride in the $55,000-added San Jose Stakes at 1 1/16 miles.

The field for the stakes for 3-year-old fillies is coming up light. Only eight were nominated, and, as of Wednesday, only five were listed as definite - Apollonesian, the Jerry Hollendorfer-trained entry of Heavenly Humor and Secret Corsage, Tequila Lana, and Lost Bride.

Kindergarten comes up strong

Fastest qualifier Looking for Chicks heads a very fast field of Quarter Horses on Saturday night in the Grade 1, $350,000 Kindergarten, the year's first futurity at Los Alamitos.

Each of the 10 qualifiers raced the 300 yards faster than 15.50 seconds, a time quick enough to place in three of the six runnings of the Kindergarten since the race was shortened from 350 yards in 1998.

Looking for Chicks won his trial in 15.350, a time that would have won two of the past three Kindergartens. Only Hawkish's track-record win in 15.18 last year is faster during that period.

The real deal on shipping from Woodbine to Fort Erie

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Handicappers who pay attention to track bias can reap the benefits when Woodbine horses ship to Fort Erie.

A prime example of this came when Sir Austin came off a winter layoff and was beaten nearly 19 lengths after running on a dead rail in a $12,500 claimer April 24 at Woodbine. Sir Austin subsequently met $7,500 nonwinners-of-three opposition May 1 at Fort Erie, and scored a front-running win as a 7-1 overlay.
