Hall to honor five

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Langfuhr and Classy 'N Smart, both of whom distinguished themselves on the racetrack before going on the successful careers in the breeding shed, are among this year's inductees to the Canadian Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame.

This year's induction ceremonies will be held on the evening of Aug. 26, at the nearby Toronto Congress Centre. The scheduled guest speaker is Jack Knowlton, managing partner of Sackatoga Stable, the partnership that owns Funny Cide.

'Sphynx' among four late nominees for Plate

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The final nomination deadline for the June 27 Queen's Plate fell on the stroke of midnight on Saturday, and the connections of four horses shelled out a $15,000 supplementary nomination fee to keep their hopes alive.

Eye of the Sphynx, Copper Trail, Rockin Again, and Desperado Kid are the new nominees and bring interesting credentials to the prospective picture for the $1 million Queen's Plate, a 1 1/4-mile race for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds.

Sharky Brown's speed the difference

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Sharky Brown will jump up in class as he seeks his third consecutive victory in Wednesday's seventh race at Woodbine, a $40,000 claimer for nonwinners of three.

Sharky Brown, who finished far back in the slop when he debuted last November, displayed a remarkable turnaround against $16,000 maidens in his first start of the season, April 17. He darted out to a clear lead over a muddy track in that six-furlong race, and opened up clear advantage at the eighth pole, before staggering home on top by three-quarters of a length.

Double D Appeal wins Nursery Stakes

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Double D Appeal overcame a poor start to score a surprise win in Sunday's $83,850 Nursery Stakes at Hollywood Park.

Double D Appeal was the 9-2 third choice in the betting, but seemed to be eliminated after she soundly bumped with Continental Caller and Lyndee's Pearl shortly after the start. But through the final half-mile, Double D Appeal steadily closed ground. She caught favored Bella Banissa in the final sixteenth and won by 1 1/2 lengths.

Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Double D Appeal ($11.40) finished five furlongs in 58.06 seconds.

Rodeo Licious wire-to-wire in Bouwerie

ELMONT, N.Y. - Rodeo Licious took advantage of her unchallenged lead in Sunday's $113,600 Bouwerie Stakes at Belmont Park to win by a length over Mistda.

Rodeo Licious, under Mike Luzzi, sprung to the early lead in the seven-furlong Bouwerie for New York-bred 3-year-old fillies. Capeside Lady, the 8-5 favorite, was off slowly from the rail, which allowed Rodeo Licious to assume a comfortable advantage down the backstretch.

Perfect trip, easy score for Winter Garden

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Winter Garden parlayed an ideal stalking trip into an easy score in Sunday's $174,250 Hendrie Handicap, a Grade 3 fixture for fillies and mares at Woodbine.

Handpainted, the 4-5 favorite, dueled with Winter Garden's stablemate, Brass in Pocket, through splits of :22.48 and :45.33 in the six and a half-furlong dash. Winter Garden raced just off the leaders in a three-wide position, and hit the front at the head of the stretch before coasting home on top by three lengths.

Dash to the End wins Kindergarten futurity at Los Al

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. - Dash to the End won California's first futurity of 2004 for Quarter Horses in Saturday's $350,000 Kindergarten at Los Alamitos.

The victory marked the second consecutive year owner Enrique Gonzalez won the prestigious race. Gonzalez won the 2003 running with Hawkish.

Dash to the End finished 300 yards in 15.501 seconds, finishing a head in front of Jumpn. La Jolla Ca ran third in the field of 10. Ridden by Joel Cruz for trainer Feliz Gonzalez, Dash to the End was one of four fillies in the field.

Pick six carryover reaches $190,452

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - There is a carryover of $190,452 for Sunday's pick six at Hollywood Park.

An upset in Saturday's last race by Pachiro ($54.60) proved elusive for bettors.

Sunday's pick six covers the fourth through nine races. The races include two turf races, three sprints on the main track, and one race over 1 1-16 miles.

There are no early scratches in the fourth through seventh races.

Miss Vegas captures Senorita

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Miss Vegas made a splashy start to her American career in Saturday's $108,900 at Hollywood Park.

Leading throughout, she held off a late run by Ticker Tape to win the one-mile turf stakes by a head.

The victory did not surprise jockey Alex Solis, who said Miss Vegas responded when challenged in the final furlong.

"The other filly came to her and I thought I had some horse," Solis said. "That's a nice filly that came to us, but she fought to the wire."
