El Dorado Shooter has trainer confused

SAN MATEO, Calif. - There is no trainer in northern California who has invested more of his heart into a horse than Cliff DeLima has with El Dorado Shooter.

DeLima bred the 7-year-old gelding, and his wife, Barbara, is the owner. El Dorado Shooter has won 12 of 26 starts and earned $533,527.

"The first thing my wife asks every day when I get home is, How is Shooter?" said DeLima, whose first stop in the morning and last stop at night is at his star's stall.

DeLima is completely mystified by El Dorado Shooter's three races this year.

Eye of the Sphynx expands repertoire

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Eye of the Sphynx has come a long way in just two short months.

Now, after recording her third consecutive win here in Sunday's 1 1/16-mile Selene Stakes, Eye of the Sphynx will get a brief respite before she goes to the post for the $500,000 Labatt Woodbine Oaks on June 13.

"She's been under a lot of pressure; we've done a lot with her in a short time," said Mark Frostad, who trains Eye of the Sphynx for Sam-Son Farm.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - In a very gutsy performance, heavily favored Eye of the Sphynx edged by Silver Bird in the final strides to capture Sunday's $275,000 Selene Stakes, a Grade 2 event for 3-year-old fillies at Woodbine.

Eye of the Sphynx stalked front-running Ontheqt in the mile and a sixteenth event, as the latter set fractions of :22.97 and :47.82 over a sloppy track.

Lord Nelson an easy winner

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Lord Nelson, trained by Dino Condilenios, was an easy 2 3/4 length winner over Commodore Craig in the 6 1/2 furlongs Hong Kong Jockey Club Handicap at Hastings Sunday. The homebred son of Maudlin carried highweight of 123 pounds and left little doubt that at seven-years-old, he's still the best older horse in British Columbia.

Laura's Lucky Boy wins Will Rogers

"It would have been better if it had happened a week ago, but we'll take this," said Orman, 35.

Winning his third consecutive race, Laura's Lucky Boy won the Grade 3 Will Rogers Stakes by four lengths over Toasted, the 2-1 favorite.

Onebigbag offers immediate return in Saratoga Handicap

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Onebigbag ($19.40), claimed for $50,000 in his last start, rallied from off the pace to win the $67,512 Saratoga Handicap at Bay Meadows on Saturday.

Favored El Dorado Shooter started a bit slowly and trailed Flying Supercon down the backstretch. He took the lead on the turn and had an open advantage in the lane but could not maintain it in the stretch.

Onebigbag sat behind the speed, moved three wide on the turn and proved too much for El Dorado Shooter after sticking his head in front at the eighth pole.

Belmont not in Purge's plans

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Purge, under John Velazquez, pulls away in the Peter Pan. He won't go on to the Belmont Stakes, however, to face Smarty Jones for a third time.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Even without leaving Philadelphia Park on Saturday afternoon, Smarty Jones was a big winner.

Purge, a horse Smarty Jones toyed with twice in Arkansas, romped to a 6 3/4-length victory in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 before 7,557 at Belmont Park. Afterward, the connections of Purge and the nine other horses in the field indicated they would run not back in the June 5 Belmont Stakes, where Smarty Jones will try to become Thoroughbred racing's 12th Triple Crown winner.

'Princess' will feel some heat

MIAMI - Dakota Light has finished behind Pampered Princess each of the last three times they have met. So why should the outcome of Monday's $40,000 Boots 'n Jackie Stakes prove any different?

Supporters of the stretch-running Dakota Light will be hoping Pampered Princess gets involved in the same type of pace battle that doomed her to a fifth-place finish as the even-money favorite 17 days earlier in the Cut the Charm Stakes. Help in that regard could come from several sources, including Doc's Doll, Firm Reality, or Romanesque.
