Hukill has two live ones

BOSSIER CITY, La. - In these days of complex conditioned optional claiming races, Friday's straight nonwinners-of-four allowance feature at Louisiana Downs is a little refreshing. The 7 1/2-furlong race on the turf drew a field of 10, including an entry.

Willie the Cat travels bumpier road to victory

AUBURN, Wash. - Willie the Cat was first to the wire in Sunday's 6 1/2-furlong Fox Sports Net Handicap, just as he had been in his five previous tours of the Emerald Downs oval, but this time it was a lot harder to get there.

Willie the Cat leapt out of the gate to establish a daylight lead in the initial strides, but when regular rider Ricky Frazier attempted to slow down the pace he was quickly joined along the rail by Best on Tap, who applied heavy pressure through a half-mile in 44.40.

Janeian takes step up

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Janeian, who almost set a Lone Star Park course record when she won the $75,000 Irving Distaff last month, will attempt to remain perfect over the local turf Monday, when she takes on Katdogawn and Bedanken in the Grade 3, $200,000 WinStar Distaff.

A one-mile turf race for fillies and mares, the WinStar Distaff is one of seven stakes worth a total of $1 million during the annual Lone Star Million Day program Monday. The richest race on the card is the Grade 3, $300,000 Lone Star Park Handicap, which is led by Kela.

Walker may be nation's first black head starter

NORTH RANDALL, Ohio - Although records are not kept on such matters, Rick Walker, the newly named head starter at Thistledown, is likely the first black person to hold that position in U.S. racing history. If Walker is indeed the nation's first black starter, it will be the third time that Thistledown has made history by elevating a black man into an official's position.

Nearly perfect at Hanshin distance

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - The trainer Pete Vestal finally remembered the last horse he ran at Arlington Park, and then kind of wished he hadn't. A filly named Atomizer took a bad step in the stretch of the Pucker Up Handicap, hurt her leg, and never raced again.

"I used to have a string up at Arlington years ago, but I've never had much luck in Chicago," Vestal said Thursday from his Kentucky base.

Ziadie not surprised by track record

MIAMI - It's common for trainers to feel confident of victory, but rarely do they go into a race truly believing their horse will also set a track record.

But trainer Kirk Ziadie had that kind of confidence in his fleet filly Whenthedoveflies, who not only dominated Sunday's Cool Air Stakes by 3 1/4 lengths but also established a course record, covering five furlongs on the turf in 54.78 seconds. The time eclipsed Heckofaralph's mark of 54.80, set in 1998.

One Bell Boy consistently in the money

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Friday's Bay Meadows feature offers a variety of handicapping angles.

If you favor class, Shamus Shea may be the choice in the $16,000 claimer at 1 1/16 miles. Pace handicappers may like the looks of Splendid Times, who drew the rail for a stretchout off a pair of sprints. Those looking for the horse with the best form may settle on One Bell Boy, who won two of his past three starts, all in Arizona, after running against cheaper here last fall and winter.
