Wild and Wicked calls it quits

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Wild and Wicked, the winner of the 2003 Ohio Derby, has been retired after suffering a recurrence of a knee injury, trainer Doug O'Neill said Friday.

The injury was detected after a workout last week. Wild and Wicked was being prepared for a start in Saturday's $250,000 Californian Stakes at Hollywood Park.

Wednesday, Wild and Wicked was shipped to owner David Randal's home in Fallbrook, Calif. O'Neill said Randal intends to stand Wild and Wicked at stud next year and is discussing arrangements with stallion farms in California and Kentucky.

Sariano one to beat in Irish Day

AUBURN, Wash. - Sariano will head a field of nine 3-year-old fillies in Sunday's one-mile, $50,000 Irish Day Handicap at Emerald Downs.

Sariano, a daughter of Rubiano who races for Dr. Rodney Orr, will carry high weight of 119 pounds on the strength of her last-to-first victory in last month's 6 1/2-furlong Federal Way Handicap. Once again, leading jockey Ricky Frazier will ride.

Smith seeks fifth stakes win of meet

CALGARY, Alberta - The 42nd running of the $50,000 Herald Gold Plate has the potential to be one of the better renewals of the race, if predicted rains stay away. A field of 10 of the best older horses on the grounds will contest Sunday's 1 1/16-mile race, the premier offering of the meet for the division.

Several of the participants were compromised by the sloppy conditions in the one-mile Teeworth Plate three weeks ago, a race in which Deputy Country won as the longest shot on the board after Richard Hamel sent him to the lead over a speed- biased track.

A new test for local star Regal Red

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Local sensation Regal Red faces a new challenge when she meets Sandia's Flicka in Sunday's $40,000 Emerald Downs Handicap at Hastings. The 6 1/2-furlong feature drew five 3-year-old fillies and will go as the sixth race.

Regal Red has toyed with the locals in both of her starts this year, but she will be up against a very quick Sandia's Flicka, who is shipping up from Emerald Downs.

Indy Groove coming around

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - It has been nearly 10 years since Tom Proctor experienced what was easily the greatest thrill of his training career, when he sent out One Dreamer to a 47-1 upset in the Breeders' Cup Distaff at Churchill Downs.

Looking back, Proctor said those years have not been particularly good to him, but not particularly bad, either.

Playing it safe with the turf

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Anyone watching the Churchill Downs simulcast signal Thursday may have found it curious that the two races scheduled for turf had been moved to the main track. Throughout the afternoon, the sun was shining brightly, and there were no outward signs of rain in the recent past or the near future.

Track superintendent Butch Lehr conceded Friday that those races "probably could have been kept on turf, if I'd had to," but as a matter of policy, the decision had been made well before the races had even started.

Final Round, fresh from a maiden score at Saratoga, drew off to a 2 1/2-length win in the slop in that race for 2-year-olds, which originally was slated for the turf.

Injury keeps Nashinda from Oaks

Nashinda, who would have been no worse than second favorite for Sunday's $500,000 Labatt Woodbine Oaks, will miss the race because of a bruised foot.

"After she galloped a mile and jogged a mile yesterday, she pulled up bad," trainer Mac Benson said Friday. Benson trains Nashinda for owner-breeder George Strawbridge Jr. "When she came back to the barn, the further she went the sorer she got.

"I hope it's just an abscess, but as sore as she is, with the heat in her foot, we couldn't enter her. There's no way 48 hours could change enough for us to consider it."
