LOUISVILLE, Ky. - It's not that Greg Foley has committed Champali exclusively to mad dashes. "It's just kind of what we've got for him right now," said Foley.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Six starters, zero tosses. The half-dozen older horses in the Aristides Breeders' Cup Handicap bring a nifty array of accomplishment and ability to the Churchill Downs table Saturday, and horseplayers figure to be hard pressed to eliminate a single one of them, even after some hard-core handicapping.
SAN MATEO, Calif. - Black Jack Road's long-standing six-furlong track record at Bay Meadows could be challenged in Saturday's $150,000 Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Sprint.
Ten older runners are signed up for the Grade 3 race, and it should be blazingly fast from gate to wire.
OCEANPORT, N.J. - Frisky Spider faces the most important test of his young career Saturday in the $60,000 Restoration Stakes at Monmouth Park.
Frisky Spider has raw ability, as demonstrated by four wins in his first seven starts.
"He's an awfully talented individual," said veteran jockey Eddie King Jr. "He's got as much talent as any horse I've been on."
That includes Frisk Me Now, the multiple graded-stakes winner who sired Frisky Spider.
But a major question remains.
"Mentally, I don't know if he's ever going to get it," said King.
ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Perfect Soul, who had been gearing up for a clash with Wando in Saturday's King Edward Breeders' Cup, was not among the entrants Thursday morning.
"He was going to run," said Roger Attfield, who trains Perfect Soul. "But he was acting a little quieter than usual, and, bingo, he's coughing this morning."
Attfield said the cough has been spreading steadily through his barn in recent days.
"I've been sweating it out all week," said Attfield. "Every day we came in here, there was a new one coughing."
EAST BOSTON, Mass. - In recent times, big favorites have used the Massachusetts Handicap to get back on their game. Cigar, Skip Away, and Behrens each had some question marks when they came to Boston, but left with a confidence boost after winning the most prestigious race held at Suffolk Downs.
This year, most of the nine horses in the are trying to regain their best form, including heavy favorite Funny Cide.
Trainer Barclay Tagg is hoping the Grade 2, 1 1/8-mile Mass Cap can get 4-year-old gelding Funny Cide to regain his star quality.
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - There is speed in the $200,000 Dallas Turf Cup at Lone Star Park on Saturday, and then there is Star Over the Bay. In from Southern California, he looks like the speed of the speed in the 1 1/8-mile turf race, which also drew front-runners Warleigh and Waupaca.
The Dallas Turf Cup is the richest grass race of the meet at Lone Star, and it drew seven horses, including Grade 2 Belmont Breeders' Cup Handicap winner Della Francesca. Warleigh is the 119-pound highweight, and he, along with the rest of the field, figures to be tracking Star Over the Bay.
ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Wando, Canada's reigning Horse of the Year, will make his first start of the Woodbine meeting Saturday in the Grade 2, $324,300 King Edward Breeders' Cup Handicap. The King Edward will be run at 1 1/8 miles on the turf and has attracted a field of five.
CALGARY, Alberta - Kat Kool, a convincing winner of the Hoofprint on My Heart, heads a strong field of 11 colts and geldings in Saturday's 74th running of the $100,000 Alberta Derby at Stampede Park.
The derby is the premier event of a 47-day meet which ends Sunday.
Kat Kool found the one-mile distance of the Hoofprint to his liking in his first try beyond six furlongs, and rider Quincy Welch had plenty of horse left at the conclusion of the May 30 race, the major local prep for the derby.
VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Shelby Madison will try to get back on track as she stretches out for the first time this year in the $40,000 Brighouse Belles Handicap at Hastings on Saturday. Only four fillies and mares have been entered in the 1 1/16-mile feature, and it shapes up as a battle between Shelby Madison and Victor's Secret.
