Mobil romps home in Dominion Day

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Mobil assumed command midway on the far turn under Todd Kabel and drew off for a convincing win in the Grade 3, $217,200 Dominion Day Handicap at Woodbine on Thursday.

Mobil raced in a stalking position in fourth in the 1 1/4-mile event, as Slim Dusty set fractions of 23.61 and 47.02 seconds. Mobil entered serious contention at the three-eighths pole, then overhauled Slim Dusty and Tackling Stress midway on the far turn before kicking clear. He went on to prevail by 12 3/4 lengths in a final time of 2:03.34, and paid $3.20.

Plate team tries to keep rolling

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Chief-swood Stable, trainer Eric Coatrieux, and jockey Robert Landry basked in the glory of winning the $1 million Queen's Plate last Sunday with Niigon. They could win another stakes Saturday at Woodbine, when the royally bred Ambitious Cat competes in the first running of the Hill 'n' Dale, a $109,500 race for 3-year-old fillies.

'Michelle' in ideal stalking spot

ELMONT, N.Y. - California shipper Friendly Michelle could end up the lukewarm favorite in Saturday's $250,000 Prioress at Belmont Park, the only Grade 1 stakes run in this country for 3-year-old fillies at six furlongs on the dirt.

Frankel's first was also his most indelible

ELMONT, N.Y. - Bobby Frankel may not be able to recall every major race he has won, but he has vivid memories of his first, which came in the 1970 Suburban Handicap with longshot Barometer.

Frankel - who seeks his second Suburban win Saturday, with Peace Rules - was 28 then and had a barn mostly made up of claiming horses. He had claimed Barometer for $15,000 from MacKenzie Miller in 1969. After winning several higher-level claiming races with Barometer, Frankel took his shot in the Suburban.

Without a Doubt needs bigger finish

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - The last three times he raced, Without a Doubt has gotten into winning position and failed. The trainer Christine Janks would love to reach even that point with Fifteen Rounds, who has finished ninth and fourth in two starts this season, and who faces Without a Doubt and four other rivals Saturday in the $40,000 Better Bee Stakes at six furlongs.

Day no longer dominates

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - It has been 14 years since Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day last chose Arlington Park over Churchill Downs as his base of operations during spring and summer. Since then, Day has amassed a record of epic proportions at Churchill, adding 22 riding titles to bring his total to 34.

But that era of domination appears to be over, albeit mostly by Day's choice.

New Yorkers make trip for Oaks

EAST BOSTON, Mass. - New England racing has always offered summertime stakes opportunities for fillies and mares on turf.

Until Rockingham Park switched to harness racing last year, the track's two biggest stakes were turf races for females. Suffolk Downs will give 3-year-old fillies their own opportunity in Saturday's $40,000 Suffolk Downs Oaks.

The Rockingham Breeders' Cup and the Spicy Living at Rockingham used to regularly draw the attention of New York trainers seeking black-type for a division that doesn't get a lot of attention - and so has the Suffolk Downs Oaks.

Pie N Burger facing loads of speed

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - There is money to be made in Saturday night's $75,000 Bob Johnson Memorial at Lone Star Park if one believes Pie N Burger is vulnerable. That's a big if, considering he is one of the region's best dirt horses, but one worth pondering.

Pie N Burger returns in 13 days following a hard-fought victory in the $50,000 Ark-La-Tex Handicap at Louisiana Downs. He will give weight to all of his rivals, and he faces a handful of speed foes in the Bob Johnson.

Good spot to get Perfect Soul going

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Life has proceeded quite imperfectly for Perfect Soul since he captured the Maker's Mark Mile at Keeneland, but it's nothing that a win Saturday in the Grade 2 Firecracker Handicap wouldn't solve.
