Gonetorule on roll of late

PLEASANTON, Calif. - Jerry Hollendorfer was close to unbeatable in Bay Meadows stakes races this spring. He will try to continue his success on the summer fair circuit.

Hollendorfer trainees won seven of the 14 stakes run at Bay Meadows and ran one-two in four of those stakes.

In Monday's $50,000 Alameda County Fillies and Mares Handicap, at the Alameda County Fair, Hollendorfer sends out a powerful one-two combination of Gonetorule and Marwood, both of whom bring strong credentials into the 1 1/16-mile race.

Two stakes at Canterbury

SHAKOPEE, Minn. - Two stakes top Monday's card at Canter-bury Park, the $40,000 HBPA Sprint for 3-year-olds and up and the $40,000 HBPA Mile for fillies and mares.

Silver Zipper returns to defend his title in the six-furlong HBPA Sprint. A 7-year-old, Silver Zipper makes his first appearance at Canterbury this year after having race at Gulf-stream and Arlington.

Silver Zipper finished third in an Arlington optional claimer won by Coach Jimi Lee in his last start. He figures to use his usual stalk-and-pounce style in the Sprint.

River Downs: Top two are due

Spring Cat and Happy Endings Too ended their 2-year-old campaigns last year by winning a stakes. Neither has won this year, but one of them could win the $40,000 Cincinnatian Stakes for Ohio-bred 3-year-old fillies at River Downs.

The Cincinnatian, scheduled for 1 1/16 miles on turf, has attracted a field of eight, but only four appear to have a chance. The Cincinnatian is restricted to accredited Ohio-breds - those sired by an Ohio stallion - so the talent pool to draw from is weaker than a registered Ohio-bred race.

Lincoln: Grayglen tries to rebound

LINCOLN, Neb. - Grayglen will try to rebound from a dismal effort on the grass at Canterbury in a field of six in the $12,500 State Fair Board Handicap at Lincoln.

After Grayglen won the Big Red Mile here May 31, trainer Al Christensen shipped him to Canterbury, where he faded to last in the Brooks Fields Stakes on June 12. Yuri Yaranga returns aboard Grayglen from post 2.

High Tech Racing and J. R. Honor both exit claiming race wins and should provide the pace for Grayglen to chase.

Swingforthefences overcame a three-wide trip and rallied for a half-length victory over Courageous Act in the $250,000 Iowa Derby Friday night at Prairie Meadows.

Swingforthefences, ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan, made his move approaching the stretch while outside of the dueling leaders, 4-5 favorite J Town, who set the pace, and Courageous Act. Swingforthefences responded to strong right-handed pressure through the final furlong and was up late to prevail, clocking the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.31. Cryptograph finished fastest to be third, a half-length behind Courageous Act.

Prep comes up like stakes

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - The Possibly Perfect Stakes on Monday at Arlington was designed as a prep for the Grade 3 Modesty Handicap, but this is a Grade 3-quality race itself.

"The bottom line is this is a good race. It's very competitive from top to bottom," said the trainer Tony Reinstedler.

I'm Majestic dangerous in closer's role

A change in running style has led to a change in class level for I'm Majestic, a former $7,500 claimer who will be a serious stretch threat to favorite Electrode in the featured first race Monday at Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, La.

A 6 1/2-furlong optional claimer, the race should produce starters for the track's $40,000 Island Whirl Handicap on July 18.

The Island Whirl is a goal for I'm Majestic, who finished second by a neck in his stakes debut last out in the $50,000 Kings Court at Louisiana Downs on May 29.
