Won't be easy for Ashwood

NORTH RANDALL, Ohio - Ashwood C C, the Ohio-bred champion handicap mare of 2003, will attempt to win the Rose DeBartolo Memorial Stakes for the third consecutive year on Saturday afternoon, when she faces five other fillies and mares. The 1 1/8-mile DeBartolo has a purse of $75,000.

In her last start, Ashwood C C finished fourth as the odds-on favorite, beaten 3 1/2 lengths in the 1 1/16-mile Merry Time Stakes on June 19. All three of the horses that finished in front of her are entered back in the DeBartolo.

Horsemen's: Shippers have edge

OMAHA, Neb. - Ship-ins dominate the $40,000 Queen's Handicap as Horsemen's Park enters day three of its four-day summer Festival of Racing.

Steve Hobby will bring over Casual Attitude and rider Tim Doocy for the Queen's, a one-mile race for fillies and mares that has seen a purse increase from last year's $30,000.

Great Lakes: 'Wind' off stakes win

MUSKEGON, Mich. - Above the Wind will try to make it two stakes wins in a row when he takes on five other Michigan-breds in the $40,000 Michigan Breeders' Cup Handicap at Great Lakes Downs.

Above the Wind, a 7-year-old, won the Wolverine by five lengths on June 12. He had three wins at Tampa Bay Downs this past winter, including the Pelican and Super Stakes. Leading rider Terry Houghton gets the call in lieu of the injured Freddie Mata, who usually handles Above the Wind. Ronnie Allen trains Above the wind, a son of Island Whirl for the Hamco Group LLC.

They're all chasing Inish Glora

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Classic Stamp has lost both of her meetings with champion Inish Glora this year, but the tables could be turned when they clash again Saturday in the Grade 3, $162,450 Dance Smartly Handicap at Woodbine.

Classic Stamp was a fast-closing second to Inish Glora when she returned from a winter break May 16 in the allowance prep for the Nassau Stakes.

Dynalympic deserves respect

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The locals always take notice when Maryland trainer Michael Dickinson comes to Woodbine.

Dickinson won the 1996 Breeders' Cup Mile here with Da Hoss, and took last year's Cup and Saucer Stakes with longshot Master William, who was a maiden. He has shipped in the late-blooming turf horse Dynalympic for Saturday's Grade 3, $168,600 Toronto Cup Handicap.

La Trillium wins like star in making

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - If good things come to those who wait, owner Percy Harcourt and trainer Paul Nielsen have plenty to look forward to with La Trillium.

Bred by Harcourt in Kentucky and racing for his Jasmine Stable, La Trillium recorded her second win in as many starts here Wednesday evening.

La Trillium, who is by Deputy Commander out of the Seattle Slew mare Tenacite, is a 4-year-old but did not make her first appearance until June 19.

Canmor has big shot in both stakes

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Canmor Farms has a good chance of winning both of the stakes races for 2-year-olds at Hastings on Saturday. Notis Otis, who is trained by Tracy McCarthy, looks like a standout in the four-horse Ladnesian Stakes, and Montero, trained by Steve Henson, figures to be first or second choice in the Timber Music Stakes, which is for fillies. Both races are at 6 1/2 furlongs and are worth $40,000.

Familiar foes for Galaxy Belle

EDMONTON, Alberta - Four fillies and mares who finished behind winner Rum Candi in a $35,000 optional claiming race here July 9 will meet again in a similar 6 1/2-furlong test that goes as Saturday's feature at Northlands.

The four - Galaxy Belle, Gleichen Reserve, To Dream Again, and Catfish Alley - are part of a field of six.

Galaxy Belle, who was runner-up to Rum Candi, drew the rail with Quincy Welch her rider. With a victory in a similar field June 20, Galaxy Belle has not been worse than third this year.

High Beyer gives 'Prize' the edge

AUBURN, Wash. - Positive Prize heads a field of seven 2-year-old colts and geldings in Saturday's $48,000 Emerald Express Stakes at six furlongs.

Positive Prize, a son of Prized from the barn of trainer Tim McCanna, won his only start June 26 when he got five furlongs in 58 seconds to prevail by 1 1/2 lengths over Seattles Best Joe in a $40,000 maiden race. The clocking earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 66, easily best in the Emerald Express field and second only to Packy's 74 in the division. Packy, who raced only 12 days ago, is skipping Saturday's stakes.

Pick six carryover reaches $140,982

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - A pick six carryover of $140,982 highlights Thursday's program at Hollywood Park, the first carryover since June 26.

Thursday's pick six covers the third through eighth races on a program that begins at 1:20 p.m.

The pick six includes three five-horse fields, including the first leg, an allowance race on turf over 1 1/8 miles. The morning-line favorite at 9-5 is Interceptor, who is trained by Paddy Gallagher.

The fourth race is for maiden 2-year-olds over 5 1/2 furlongs. Giacomo and Megabyte led the field of nine.
