Churchill selling seat licenses

Churchill Downs has begun selling 30-year seat licenses - ranging in price from $18,000 to $75,000 - for the right to buy finish-line box or table seating at the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby.

The licenses will include the Breeders' Cup when it is run periodically at Churchill Downs.

Patrons will have the rights to their assigned boxes or tables, but still must buy tickets to the Oaks, Derby, and Breeders' Cup. The licenses can be transferred, but if sold must first be offered back to Churchill Downs.

Al's Dearly Bred not done yet

CHICAGO - Yes, the aging turf horse Al's Dearly Bred is taking a class drop on Sunday at Arlington, but only if you take the short view. Al's Dearly Bred ran a month ago for an $80,000 claiming price, and in Sunday's featured fifth race he is in for $62,500, his lowest level in quite some time. But consider that at age 4, the 7-year-old Al's Dearly Bred could have been purchased out of a race for only $10,000.

Improved Tobe Suave hard to beat

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - According to trainer Steve Bryant, Tobe Suave has moved up five lengths since his 1 1/4-length win over Future Flash in the Burnaby Breeders' Cup July 1. If that's the case, Take Suave will be very tough to beat as the favorite in the $40,000 Jim Coleman Province Stakes at Hastings Sunday. The 1 1/16-mile feature drew eight 3-year-olds, including Lord Samari, last year's local 2-year-old champ who is coming off of a troubled second in the Alberta Derby June 19.

Sunday's card also includes the $40,000 Nanaimo for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles.

Miss Matched creates pleasant problems

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Bill Perry faces a pair of tough questions in the aftermath of the smashing debut by Miss Matched on Thursday afternoon at Monmouth Park.

Where should he next run Miss Matched, a 2-year-old daughter of Formal Gold, following her 12 1/2-length romp? And should he entertain the offers from the bloodstock agents who keep his cell phone chiming?

Neither question has an easy answer.

Trackside unable to take bets for third day

Late afternoon on Friday, power remained off at Churchill Downs's simulcast wagering facility, Trackside, following powerful thunderstorms in Kentucky and southern Indiana on Tuesday evening. This forced the cancellation of betting at Trackside on Friday for the third consecutive day.

The loss of wagering at Trackside, which regularly has the highest handle of any offtrack betting location in the state, has dramatically reduced in-state wagering on Ellis Park races and the profits the track generates from such wagers.

River Downs: Me Son has edge

Me Son will attempt to become the second Calder-based runner to win a stakes at River Downs this year when he meets nine opponents in the $40,000 Hoover Stakes for Ohio-bred 2-year-olds. The Hoover, the first 2-year-old stakes of the meet, will be run at 5 1/2 furlongs.

Outrageous Queen, the Ohio-bred winner of the Tomboy Stakes in May, was the first Calder-based stakes winner of the meet.

A three-length winner of a $12,500 maiden claimer in his debut, Me Son was subsequently unplaced in two open stakes. All three races were at Calder.
